An ongoing opportunity has arisen for a Software Engineering Manager to join the Digital Enablement team, as the successful candidate you will lead the strategic ideation, planning, design and delivery, and the ongoing management and evolution of the Software Engineering practise for Deakin University. This position provides leadership and direction in areas of accountability, and works with the University community to identify, analyse and implement solutions and offerings for the benefit of the University and its stakeholders. The successful candidate will support and advise Executives and senior managers in leveraging the benefits of these solutions and offerings.

This position sits within the Futures Portfolio, reporting to the Group Manager, Software Engineering. The position will supervise staff and lead a large team of Software Engineers, Automation Specialists and Domain Architects and has budget responsibility. 

The Manager, Software Engineering will work in partnership with key stakeholders within the University across all Portfolios and Faculties, as well as external vendors and other partners in order to successfully fulfil the requirements of the role. They will build and maintain effective relationships across the University, particularly with key strategic programs, sponsors, and the Deakin program/project management and product team communities. 

Your key responsibilities will include, and not limited to:

  • Manage the Software Engineering team within Digital Services to lead and support the strategy and delivery of software engineering practices for Deakin wide initiatives.
  • Lead the development and implementation of strategies to evolve Software Engineering functions that align to business goals and technological sustainability. 
  • Lead and manage the day-to-day activities and ensure quality outcomes of a large multi-disciplined team comprised of internal staff and, where required, external specialist resources, to achieve University and Portfolio objectives.
  • Provide high-level advice and support to the Group Manager, Software Engineering or respective project director/manager on strategies to remove progress barriers, monitor risks, or re-align and refocus elements of the programs when there is risk of not meeting scope, timeline, outcomes and budget, with respect to our Software Engineering function. 

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience; or
  • Extensive experience conceptualising, planning, delivering and supporting effective enterprise-scale application technology solutions, within a large and complex organisation.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the management of large technical teams responsible for application architecture, automation, software development and operations in a hybrid infrastructure environment.
  • Deep experience in creating strategies, maintaining successful roadmaps, applying relevant methodologies and techniques to sustain a solution’s relevance, value and reliability over time.
  • Solid knowledge of ICT best practice and current and emerging industry trends, with respect to application architecture, software development, automation and reliability engineering.
  • Proven negotiation, vendor and partner management experience.
  • Strong analytical, root cause analysis and problem-solving experience.
  • Working within the higher education sector *Desirable
