The Job

The Manager, Safety and Safety Systems is responsible for the development and leadership of safety and safety systems and driving a compliance based culture for the management of the Institute of Frontier Materials (IFM) and Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation (IISRI) in occupational health and safety (OHS) standards set by external governmental organisations including Work Safe, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Biosecurity)

As a Manager, Safety and Safety Systems, you will:

  • Lead and drive a safety culture and systems that ensure the Institutes are compliant in all aspects of OHS, provide specialist advice in relation to OHS matters and provide leadership and guidance in the development and implementation of OHS systems, programs and initiatives with a core focus on compliance
  • Build and inspire a culture of integrity, accountability and inclusive practice across Deakin to ensure alignment of all functional and operational business plans to Deakin’s strategic plan
  • Understand environmental trends and integrate this knowledge into dynamic strategies focused on value, quality, people, efficiency and investment to deliver goals and identify new opportunities and best practices and systems in health and safety and to implement changes in line with legislative requirements and best practice
  • Develop and implement policy, systems and procedures that deliver a consistent approach to the management of OHS within IFM & IISRI including induction and training of staff and students involved in research programs, hazardous materials, dangerous goods and their management and monitoring

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience in OHS, biological sciences, chemistry or engineering, or an equivalent combination of training and experience in OHS
  • Extensive experience of OHS implementation and leadership in diverse teaching and research laboratory environments and / or equivalent experience in industry for the management of OHS practices, management of chemical, radiation and / or biological hazards
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of OHS practices and ability to interpret and apply in a practical manner complex legislation and regulations
  • You will have demonstrated skills in managing change within organisations
