Ongoing position

The Legal Services Branch provides independent legal advice and other services across the University and its controlled entities including in relation to contracts, internal governance, regulatory requirements, resolution of disputes, employment and industrial relations, strategic projects, freedom of information, research and commercialisation.

The Manager, Legal Services provides leadership and management to the Legal Operations team, which supports all of the University’s varied and diverse legal needs (other than its research and commercialisation activities).  This team of seven professionals is also responsible for the University’s Freedom of Information function and its trusts and bequests governance framework.

The role is a rare in-house opportunity to lead a team of professionals in a collegiate and varied environment, deputise for General Counsel as needed, and provide high quality independent legal advice across the University community.

To be successful you will need:

  • extensive post-qualification experience in a law firm or in-house legal role within Australia, with sector experience being desirable but not required
  • experience in contract law, torts, administrative law, intellectual property, anti-discrimination and equal opportunity laws, and integrity laws
  • experience with drafting a range of commercial and non-commercial contracts, such as procurement, software, partnerships, and joint venture agreements
  • strong understanding of corporate governance and the regulatory environment applying to universities
  • proven ability to lead a team of professionals, manage and achieve results in pressure situations and deal with ambiguity and change

Qualification/s:

  • a Degree in Law obtained from an Australian university
  • a current unrestricted South Australian Practicing Certificate or ability to acquire one before commencement
