Technical Services
Under broad direction, the Manager, Engineering Services provides technical and operational leadership to the Engineering Services Team within the College of Science & Engineering. The incumbent is primarily responsible for the provision of College wide engineering support and resources, maintenance of these resources and ensuring the engineering services team (EST) meets its Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) obligations.
Key Position Responsibilities
Developing and implementing policy, procedures and systems for the management of the CSE Engineering Services Team (EST), engineering teaching and research laboratories and College workshops.
Provide high level engineering expertise to the College of Science and Engineering.
Establishing and managing projects for the design and development of teaching and research equipment, systems and facilities.
Provide ongoing guidance for staff professional development within the EST.
Play a key leadership role within the broader technical services team.
Budgetary planning, forecasting and monitoring the expenditure of funds.
Manage procurement and commissioning of equipment items.
Planning and scheduling staff workloads in accordance with College priorities.
Liaising with academic staff with regard to teaching and research activities in order to ensure smooth and efficient delivery of Engineering operations and development.
Liaising with external organisations including industrial partners and suppliers.
Contributing to the preparation of College submissions and responses on a range of matters including policy.
Ensuring that technical documentation is captured and managed, including asset records, test schedules, service history, project design work and other activities undertaken by the EST.
Co‐ordinating the testing, calibration and repair of apparatus and equipment.
Ensuring that WHS management systems are established and operating effectively in accordance with direction from the College WHS team & committee.
Manage the WHS inductions for staff, students, contractors, visiting scholars and any other visitors who are required to work with specialised equipment that is managed by the EST.
Investigate and resolve safety concerns in consultation with staff, elected Health and Safety representatives, and safety compliance specialists as required.
Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the role as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.
Key Position Capabilities
Qualifications recognisable by Engineers Australia at Engineering Associate level or higher in an engineering field related to one or more of the disciplines taught within the College with relevant experience or an equivalent combination of experience and/or training.
Developed skills in staff supervision and development; demonstrated experience supervising technical specialists supporting teaching and/or research laboratories/workshops.
Demonstrated experience with leading and developing teams in a multi-discipline team environment.
High level interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
Experienced with engineering practices and software specific to the selected engineering discipline.
Demonstrated ability to produce high level workplace documents.
High level organisational skills, including self‐direction and the ability to achieve a number of work functions concurrently.
Demonstrated ability to apply initiative and judgement in complex situations.
Demonstrated experience in driving continuous improvement in a team environment, including workplace safety, and professional development.
Competent user of document development and management software e.g. Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Project, Adobe Acrobat and Cloud based management tools.
Experience in managing University teaching/research laboratories and workshops.
Previous experience in supporting or conducting University research.
Prescribed Conditions for Employment
