The primary purpose of the Management Accountant, University Strategic Research Projects is to ensure the effective operational and strategic financial management of the ongoing projects being undertaken as a result of state and federally funded research initiatives such as The Victorian Higher Education State investment Fund (VHESIF), and the federally funded Trailblazer initiative (REaCH), along with future projects arising from these start up initiatives.

As a Management Accountant, you will:

  • Provide accurate and timely finance reports to the steering committees, Project Control Groups, Program Management Office, Compact Working Group, and integration of projects into reporting for the Infrastructure and Property Group, Research Portfolio and Deakin Portfolio Office
  • Oversee the timely coordination, preparation and submission of budget and forecasts for all projects and the overall program ensuring submission of annual budgets, forecast and triennial projections, monitoring actual performance throughout the year. Ensure optimal operational and strategic financial management of the Projects through interpreting, explaining and driving finance performance within the Projects
  • Work alongside Project managers and sponsors to support and advise on key business planning assumptions, trade-offs and opportunities to bring improved outcomes. Work with Project owners to develop robust financial resourcing and operating plans for the ongoing activities post completion of the project phase Infrastructure build of these initiatives.
  • Improve practices and ensure buy in for new ways of working     

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Postgraduate qualifications or progress towards postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience; or
  • Extensive experience and management expertise; or
  • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
  • Certified Practising Accountant / Chartered Accountant (or studying towards completion)
  • Experience at a senior administrative level in financial administration and related activities, preferably in a large Research Organisation or other large organisation with complex administrative structures, policies, and procedures
  • Experience in the preparation and monitoring of complex budgets and performance reports for discrete projects or initiatives.
