PRIMARY DETAIL

• Macquarie University will offer up to 10 MQRF positions, commencing between 1 January 2025 and 30 June 2025.
• Salary Package: From $106,089 (Level A, Step 6) to $113,697 (Level A, Step 8) p.a., plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading.
• Appointment Type: Full-time, fixed-term for 3 years. (There is also a full-time, fixed-term option for 4 years, with a 25% teaching component.)

THE ROLE

The Macquarie University Research Fellowship (MQRF) supports researchers within three years of the award of their PhD who have an outstanding track record (relative to opportunity) and excellent research potential. It provides a research-focussed incubation period for early- career researchers to increase their competitive edge in securing externally funded fellowships and other external research funding. It aims to enhance the research capabilities of existing and emerging areas of research strength at Macquarie University.

About You

The MQRF is open to early-career researchers from any country within 3 years of their PhD conferral. You are eligible to apply if:

  • your PhD was conferred on or after 1 March 2021; or

  • you can substantiate (with evidence) an allowable period of career interruption that would be commensurate with conferral of your PhD on or after 1 March 2021; or

  • your thesis was submitted on or before 31 December 2023 (noting that the fellowship cannot commence until your PhD has been conferred and must commence no later than 30 June 2025); and

  • you have agreement from an academic within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences to act as your academic sponsor for the application, noting no academic may sponsor more than one applicant.

Gauging Your Likely Competitiveness

There is intense competition for MQRFs each year with a success rate less than that of nationally competitive funding opportunities, such as the ARC DECRA scheme and the NHMRC Investigator Grant scheme. Consequently, some track record indicators from previously successful MQRFs are outlined below to help you gauge whether you are likely to be competitive:

MQRFs in Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences

Successful applicants have had on average 17 publications, with an average of 9 as first author, in high-quality journals or with high-quality publishers. The successful candidates had an average of 21 conference presentations, were awarded an average of over $450,000 in competitive grants and received up to 8 external and internal prizes or awards. (This information is relevant to intending applicants hoping to work in our Department of Linguistics or School of Psychological Sciences.)

MQRFs in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine:

Successful applicants have had on average 25 publications, with an average of 11 as first author, in high-quality (and often exceptional) journals. The publications attracted on average 400 citations, resulting in an average h-index of 11. The successful candidates had an average of 25 conference presentations, were awarded an average of $900,000 in competitive grants and received up to 9 external and internal prizes or awards. (This information is relevant to intending applicants hoping to work in our Australian Institute of Health Innovation, Department of Chiropractic, Department of Health Sciences or Macquarie Medical School.)
