Your new role
As Lecturer/Senior Lecturer – Indigenous Health you will support Indigenous health teaching and cultural orientation and safety activities for students and staff within the Discipline of Medicine.
You will also support admission processes for entry to the MBBS course including those for our specific Indigenous Australian entry pathway, be available to provide mentoring for our Indigenous Australian medical students, inform and support wellbeing initiatives for all students, and facilitate or lead research and evaluation activities. You will work closely with the Associate Dean (Medicine), Director – Medical Program, Director – Medical Education and Clinical Specialist Lead for Indigenous Health.
This role would be well-suited to an Indigenous Australian health care provider (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker or Practitioner, nurse, psychologist, allied healthcare provider, pharmacist, doctor) who would like to ensure the next generation of doctors is well positioned to meet the health care needs of Indigenous Australians.
You will be someone with experience in health care and have a passion for supporting the wellbeing of students and ensuring they adopt standards of behaviour and knowledge that enables them to provide high quality, appropriate and culturally safe health care for Indigenous Australians. You will also have a demonstrated commitment to supporting and growing the Indigenous Australia medical practitioner workforce.
In this role you will….
- Develop and provide cultural security and safety training across all years of the MBBS course
- Participate in teaching and assessment activities
- Support wellbeing initiatives for all students
- Develop and oversee the delivery of mentoring and support activities for Indigenous Australian medical students
- Participate in admission and selection activities for the MBBS course including the specific Indigenous Australian entry pathway
- Develop initiatives to enhance Indigenous Australian medical student recruitment
- Support external accreditation activities
- Experience in health care delivery
- Links with Indigenous Australian organisations including Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services and organisations
- Experience in teaching and the development and delivery of cultural safety and orientation training
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work in a team environment
Desirable attributes:
- Mental health and wellbeing training and experience
- PhD or equivalent research experience
- Prior research publication and grant success
- Experience and well-developed understanding of pedagogy and educational practice

The Curtin Medical School - Discipline of Medicine’s mission is that our graduates be recognised for their commitment to general practice, mental health, and aged care as well as rural, regional and Indigenous health care. It is one of four Disciplines in the Curtin Medical School and is responsible for our five-year undergraduate medical program (MBBS) and an associated, dedicated intercalated research year (BMedSci (Hons)) for selected MBBS students. We welcomed our first cohort of 60 medical students in 2017 and celebrated our first graduating doctors at the end of 2021.
The medical school is based in a dedicated building on the University Bentley campus with tailored clinical teaching and simulation facilities and offers the only undergraduate medical degree in Western Australia. It now enrols 120 new students each year with preferential selection of students with a rural, Indigenous Australian, or disadvantaged background. In addition, the School has nine metropolitan hospital clinical placement sites, health campuses in Midland (Perth) and Kalgoorlie (Goldfields, WA), is a member of Rural Clinical School WA and has close links with metropolitan and rural primary care and other community-based health care providers.
