School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences

The School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences is part of The University of Queensland (UQ) Faculty of Science, and is an international leader in chemical and molecular life sciences teaching, research and research translation. Our academics teach and research in the disciplines of chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, microbiology and parasitology.

The School’s biomolecular research spans small synthetic molecules through to proteins, nucleic acids, viruses and microorganisms, and its materials research encompasses the design and synthesis of molecular devices, functional polymers and nanomaterials.

Many colleagues are widely published internationally and have contributed to significant scientific advances as diverse as organic opto-electronics, safer vaccines and potential treatments for viral infections, ways to combat antimicrobial drug resistance, improved food safety screening, and breast cancer research to allow early detection.

About This Opportunity

There are two full-time continuing positions available, Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Organic Chemistry and Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry. Both positions will contribute to postgraduate supervision, and further development of the programs where required, as well as administrative and other activities associated with the School. The positions are offered as Teaching and Research (T&R) roles and candidates will be expected to perform teaching, research, service and engagement duties.

The incumbents may coordinate or lead the activities of other staff and are expected to have an active and effective record of supervising Higher Degree by Research students successfully to completion as principal supervisor.

About You

  • PhD in the discipline areas of organic and/or medicinal chemistry or biochemistry and/or cell biology.
  • Ability to teach Levels 1, 2 3 and 4 of the Chemistry/Biochemistry curriculum at UQ in the area of organic and preferably medicinal chemistry or cell biology and/or metabolic biochemistry.
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge in the discipline area.
  • Demonstrated contribution to teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate level in a variety of settings, including small and large groups, studio-based teaching and individual project supervision.
  • Track record of publications in reputed refereed journals and presentations at conferences.
  • Evidence of a contribution to research, including successful external grant applications.

Criteria for appointment at Level C:

  • PhD in the discipline areas of biochemistry and/or cell biology.
  • Ability to teach Levels 1, 2 3 and 4 of the Biochemistry curriculum at UQ in the area of cell biology and/or metabolic biochemistry.
  • An ability to establish effective relationships and to represent and promote the discipline area at a university and wider community level, including industry, government and professional bodies.
  • Track record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion.
  • An established profile in the scholarship of teaching as evidenced by participation in the communication and dissemination of teaching practice within the discipline and engagement in subject, professional and pedagogy research as required to support teaching activities.

What We Can Offer

These are full time, continuing positions at Academic Level B or Level C, commensurate with relevant skills and qualifications.

Academic Level B full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range of AUD$101,533 – $120,570 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range of AUD$118,794 – $141,067 p.a.

Academic Level C full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range AUD$124,378 – $143,415 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range of AUD$145,523 – $167,796 p.a.
