Base Salary Level B/C/D $113,184 p.a. - $183,911 p.a. + 17% superannuation (to a total package of $132,425 p.a - $215.176 p.a).

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding Lecturer/Senior Lecturer /Associate Professor (Wildlife and Avian Medicine) who will contribute to providing excellent clinical teaching in wildlife and avian medicine into the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program at the Sydney School of Veterinary Science, aspects of the Faculty’s Veterinary Biology and Veterinary Bioscience programs, and be involved in postgraduate training in higher degrees by research. The appointee will advance knowledge in aspects of wildlife medicine through an active research program, supervision of HDR students, active involvement in the School’s clinical and fundamental research program, and other scholarly activities. It is proposed that this role would also have some clinical responsibilities for wildlife and avian patients through the Avian Reptile and Exotic Pet Hospital although this will not be their primary purpose.

Your key responsibilities will be to:
contribute to all aspects of teaching in wildlife and avian medicine including planning, design, delivery, and evaluation of student learning
contribute to broader education requirements of the DVM and the Faculty’s Veterinary Biology and Veterinary Bioscience programs in keeping with your veterinary skills
oversee the clinical teaching in the AREPH ensuring provision of appropriate assessment tasks, skills acquisition, clinic based tutorials, and feedback on learning to students
provide a shared leadership approach to sustainability of the clinical and teaching operation with a particular focus on adequate caseload and resources
supervise and mentor more junior veterinary staff including postgraduate students
lead and contribute research programs in a wildlife-related discipline and support other research in the Faculty focused on aspects of Conservation Medicine or One Health.
Since the founding of veterinary science in 1910, the mission of the Sydney School of Veterinary Science (SSVS) has been to provide the nation’s best training in the health, welfare, and conservation of animals. The School is internationally accredited with the American Veterinary Medical Association, Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (UK) and the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council. Veterinary science at Sydney is ranked 2nd in the Southern Hemisphere and 22nd in the world, according to the QS World University Subject Rankings 2022, and has received the top rating (5/5) for research excellence in the Australian Government’s 2018 Excellence in Research for Australia.
Our School operates across two campuses, Camperdown (inner-city) and Camden (semi-rural) and has three teaching hospitals that provide unique learning experiences and research opportunities. The School also provides diagnostic services for clinicians and researchers using state of the art equipment. SSVS is home to over 80 academic staff and over 120 dedicated professional staff committed to ensuring the highest quality experience and outcomes for our DVM and research students. We employ a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to research, which in turn, informs our teaching. Our community of approximately 500 veterinary students and 90 higher degree by research students are enabled to develop their skills in inquiry, evidence-based medicine and innovation.
SSVS has seven primary interconnected research themes and academic staff are encouraged to develop their interest in these areas:

About you

a degree in veterinary science with registration to practice as a veterinarian, and clinical experience in wildlife/ avian medicine
a PhD (or near completion) in wildlife or avian health or a related discipline
a demonstrated ability to attract research funding
an established track record of publications in research in wildlife or avian health and/or infectious diseases relevant to wildlife
experience in teaching and learning, as evidenced by participation in team teaching within an established program and experience in teaching in a variety of settings
demonstrated success in designing, implementing, and evaluating teaching and learning initiatives
developing a network of relationships with key academic, industry, and professional institutions, partners, and stakeholders
experience in supervising or mentoring others and/or coordinating team activities
demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively across a range of media and forums
a developing knowledge and understanding of the key strategic issues in the discipline and higher education sector
(Desirable) Fellowship of the Australian & New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists or equivalent related to wildlife health, enabling registration as a specialist in NSW.
The commencement level will be determined based on the candidate’s skills, experience, and knowledge.
