Through the teaching, research and community outreach conducted by its three Schools (Private and Commercial Law; Global and Public Law; and Law, Society and Criminology), the Faculty promotes a holistic understanding of law and its role in society. It has a strong and unwavering commitment to social justice, technical excellence and inter-disciplinary research, informed by the knowledge that law is a vital part of commerce and government, but that it can and does bear harshly and disproportionately upon certain sectors of the community.

We are looking for a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Private Law to join the School of Private and Commercial Law and contribute to the School’s teaching, research, and engagement activities. The School is interested in applicants with broad research and teaching expertise in private law, especially property law and related fields. The appointee will be expected to develop and maintain a strong program of individual research and to participate actively in the School’s research culture, and to convene and teach into the faculty’s Land Law LLB and JD course and other private law courses in the faculty’s LLB, JD and LLM programs.

About the role

• $111K - $178K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading

• Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Private Law reports to the Head of the School of Private and Commercial Law and has no direct reports.

This position is being offered as a Level B, C or D. The level of appointment will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Specific responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to:

Level B

• Develop and contribute to a program of high quality research in private law that is consistent with the broad research aims of the School and Faculty
• Undertake the successful supervision of higher degree research (HDR) students
• Contribute to the teaching excellence of the School and Faculty, including by: applying a well-defined teaching philosophy and a critically reflective teaching practice that inspires student learning; developing undergraduate and postgraduate courses and curricula in private law; administering and co-ordinating courses, including multi-class courses; designing learning resources for, and preparing and delivering seminars to, undergraduate and postgraduate cohorts; setting assessment for, assessing and giving feedback to students; and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate research projects and theses
• Make service contributions to the School and Faculty, including being an active member of School and Faculty committees as required, and participating in School and Faculty meetings
• Make significant contributions to UNSW, the profession, and/or the discipline, including involvement in professional activities and other forms of external engagement
• Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct
• Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others

Level C (in addition to the above):

• Make significant research contributions that have an impact in private law, and create at least a nationally recognised research track record
• Seek to obtain research income from nationally competitive research grants (and/or research fellowships)
• Play a leading role in the supervision of HDR candidates, as well as actively engage in chairing and participating in HDR confirmation and review panels
• Take a significant role in the development/design of innovative teaching and learning, including blended and online/digital approaches, and in curriculum development
• Develop links within the discipline, industry and profession (including. contributing to professional development activities)

Level D (in addition to the above):

• Make leading, high quality research contributions that have a significant impact in private law, including creating a nationally and internationally recognised research track record
• Take on leadership roles in private law, collaborating with colleagues on research projects and seeking to obtain research income from nationally competitive research grants (and/or research fellowships) where appropriate, and seeking to strengthen the School and Faculty's research culture
• Take a leading role in the development/design of innovative teaching and learning, including blended and online/digital approaches, and in curriculum development, and seek to identify and apply for education funding opportunities
• Engage in peer review to support the teaching of colleagues
• Supervise and mentor early career academics
• Make a substantial service contribution by leading School meetings and School/Faculty committees as required

About you (selection criteria)

Level B

• A PhD in a relevant field or equivalent postgraduate qualification, with expertise in private law
• A successful research publications record, and clear research plans, in private law, especially property law
• Demonstrated experience in educational design, development and delivery at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, especially in teaching property law, including experience using and/or designing educational technologies and using online delivery methods
• Demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication, relationship building and organisational skills and the capacity to work collaboratively and contribute to the School's service and engagement activities
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines
• Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training

Level C (in addition to the above):

• A demonstrated track record of research in private law, especially property law, with evidence of publications of high quality and impact, and the capacity for research leadership
• Experience in successfully recruiting and/or supervising high calibre HDR students, and in chairing and/or participating in HDR confirmation and review panels
• Demonstrated success in initiating curriculum development and improvement, and in implementing new educational technologies and online delivery methods
• Demonstrated service contributions, including the ability to interact with the profession and/or industry

Level D (in addition to the above):

• Leadership in research in private law, especially property law, including:
  • a track record of internationally recognised research, with publications of high quality and impact,
  • experience in initiating, collaborating on and delivering on research projects, and
  • success in obtaining, or a demonstrated willingness to apply for, external research funding
• Leadership, and evidence of successful achievements, in educational design, development and delivery at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, especially in property law
• Demonstrated substantial service contributions, and success in building collaborative partnerships with the profession, industry and/or wider community
• Outstanding interpersonal, communication, relationship building and negotiation skills
• A demonstrated capacity to provide academic leadership and mentoring to colleagues, including early career academics
