Position overview
The School is looking to appoint an outstanding scholar whose research will complement the School’s existing strengths and will contribute to the new Bachelor of Philosophy, Neuroscience, and Psychology. The appointee will be expected to carry out world-leading research resulting in regular publications in leading journals, contribute to the teaching programme by convening one undergraduate course per year, supervise graduate students, apply for external grants, and be available for service roles as appropriate. In addition, each appointee can expect extensive tutorial (TA) support, generous travel and research funding, active mentoring (especially in the case of junior appointments), and significant opportunities to bring international visitors to Australia for workshops and our annual “visitor season.”

The position will be appointed at Level B (roughly equivalent to the rank of Assistant Professor in North America), and will be in philosophy of mind, broadly construed to include philosophy of psychology, philosophy of cognitive science, and philosophy of neuroscience.

The School of Philosophy is a world-leading department that combines several of the world's most cited living philosophers with dynamic mid-career researchers, and award-winning early career researchers. Our principal strengths are in moral and political philosophy, philosophy of science (especially philosophy of biology, probability, and decision theory), and philosophy of mind. We have a proud reputation of repeatedly winning significant support for both individual and team projects from the Australian Research Council. Each year we welcome numerous international visitors to Canberra (more than 60 in 2023), and host multiple workshops alongside vibrant series of weekly research seminars. We have a constant flow of postdoctoral researchers, who go on to continuing positions at leading departments worldwide. We have three major research Centres: the Centre for Moral, Social and Political Theory, the Centre for Philosophy of the Sciences, and the Centre for Consciousness.

The School of Philosophy also has a proud tradition of interdisciplinary work in collaboration with both local and international colleagues. Philosophy will be an integral part of the new ANU degree, the Bachelor of Philosophy, Neuroscience, and Psychology (BPNP) degree, a highly selective program with a first intake in 2025.
