Position Summary

The Lecturer will, under routine to general supervision, contribute to quality research and/or evaluation endeavours and the planning and delivery of topics within the suite of undergraduate and/or postgraduate topics/courses in health justice. This includes the development of teaching materials, delivery of lectures/tutorials or other innovative teaching and learning strategies, examinations and placement education. The incumbent will also contribute to strengthening existing partnerships or exploring new partnerships with external stakeholders that have potential for providing improved teaching, learning and/or research outcomes for the University.
The incumbent will prioritise, coordinate, monitor workflow and provide informal day‐to-day feedback to research support staff and casual academic teaching staff according to the University’s policies, practices and standards.
The incumbent will possess cultural knowledge and understanding relevant to advancing health justice in the Northern Territory (NT). The Lecturer Indigenous Health (Health Justice) position will facilitate academic, research and strategic project co-ordination activities focused on advancing health justice knowledge and action across the NT, with a particular focus on activities in Central Australia. The position will play an integral role for Flinders engagement with key external stakeholders and the local community with respect to health justice. This position is essential to building a culturally responsive health workforce for the NT and achieving the aims of Flinders Reconciliation Action Plan.
The Lecturer Indigenous Health (Health Justice) will report to the Director, University Department of Rural Health. The incumbent will work closely with academic, research and professional staff to support and participate in the education team and cultivate relationships with program coordinators and course directors within Flinders University.

Key Position Responsibilities

The Lecturer Indigenous Health (Health Justice) is accountable for:

  • Developing curricula and facilitating teaching and assessment activities for award and non-award courses and workshops with potential topic coordination relevant to areas of expertise, specifically that relating to health justice.
  • Developing content and curricula relevant to Indigenous cultures for award and non-award courses, workshops, and research.
  • Making an independent contribution to the development of activities at Flinders that support advancing health justice in the NT.” Planning and implementing health justice initiatives and activities in partnership with students, staff and the local community in Central Australia.
  • Contribute expertise to the teaching team for delivery of award and non-award courses.
  • Promoting the principles of primary health care, cultural safety and an interprofessional approach to remote health practice.
  • Promoting links between key stakeholders, particularly Indigenous individuals, organisations and communities and Flinders University.
  • Representing Flinders University at community forums and provide expertise for community consultation and engagement.
  • Undertaking independent research relating to remote and/or youth health justice issues with a view to improving health and justice outcomes for Indigenous peoples, particularly youth.
  • Undertaking any other duties as directed by the supervisor.
  • Staff responsibilities may be varied by the University in order to allow the University to respond to operational needs or requirements.
  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.

Key Position Capabilities

  • Identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and is recognised as such by an appropriate Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander body

  • Completion of a PhD, or equivalent qualification.

  • for Indigenous staff members whose duties involve cultural activity which prioritises Indigenous knowledges and practices requiring community cultural recognition: evidence of such recognition plus completion or near completion of a postgraduate degree or substantive experience in some branch of Indigenous studies/education.

  • Demonstrated experience in project management and report writing.

  • Evidence of community recognition of Indigenous knowledges and practices.

  • Demonstrated understanding of and experience in teaching and project management in areas relating to Indigenous health and justice issues, cultural safety, primary health care and population health.

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver high quality education/training related to Central Australian Indigenous knowledges and cultural practices.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to fostering a positive workplace culture, and role modelling behaviours that support the University’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

  • Established relationships with Indigenous communities, groups and organisations within Central Australia, including the ability to lead community consultation.

  • Commitment to the development of inter-professional approaches to education and research.

  • Demonstrated high level of communication, interpersonal, and collaborative skills with demonstrated experience in both student engagement and community engagement including with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal direction, and as part of multidisciplinary team.

  • A speaker of at least one Indigenous language of Central Australia (desirable)

  • Demonstrated ability to develop curriculum and programs (desirable)

  • Demonstrated scholarship (research, Indigenous knowledges, health justice) (desirable)
