The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at Macquarie University (MQ) in Sydney Australia is making a substantial investment to grow its research capacity in statistical data science and seeks to appoint an outstanding candidate to a continuing position as Lecturer (level B).

The successful appointee will be employed under the 'Teaching and Research Academic job family - a balanced academic role which combines elements of research, teaching, leadership and service', typically at 40% research, 40% teaching and 20% service distribution.

In research, the appointee will be expected to conduct high-quality independent and collaborative research in Statistical Data Science with a preference that this research enables new collaborations within the School and across the University including but not limited to Astrostatistics, Biostatistics, Computational Statistics, Medical Statistics, Statistical Image Analysis, and Statistical Machine Learning. Experience with or potential to build industry collaborations would be highly valued.

In teaching, the appointee will teach into one or more of our degrees, including the undergraduate major in Statistical Data Science, the Master of Applied Statistics degree, and the Master of Data Science. The appointee will be mentored to develop a teaching philosophy and pedagogy that improves the student experience, outcomes, and employability.

About Us

The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences comprises the disciplines of Astronomy, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics. We are dedicated to cultivating an inclusive and diverse workplace where every individual is valued, respected, and supported. Our School actively champions diversity and inclusivity through a range of initiatives and support mechanisms overseen by the Equity and Diversity Portfolio. These efforts underscore our commitment to fostering an environment where everyone can thrive and contribute to their fullest potential.

The School has 15 active members who are part of the Statistical Modelling for Complex Data research group who exploit and develop cutting-edge statistical and computational methods to tackle a variety of real-world problems from small, designed studies to large-scale high-dimensional data challenges. Our research combines applied statistics and statistical theory to offer novel statistics methodology and computational technology for evidence-based science discovery. This position is part of our strategic growth in Statistical Data Science.

The DataX Research Centre is a university-wide partnership for new data science discovery in science, health and society. DataX aims to transform approaches to research in these fields through the development and application of new advanced data analytics and machine learning methods. This creates an outstanding environment to establish new interdisciplinary research collaborations with exceptional groups of academics from many application areas of statistics.

Members of the School are very active in the Macquarie University Astrophysics and Space Technology Research Centre, which pushes the limits of astrophysics and space science through cutting-edge instrumentation development and complex data-intensive research capabilities. This opens novel opportunities for statistical data scientists to develop data science solutions that contribute to answering big questions about our Universe.

At our School, we pride ourselves on teaching excellence. With a team of innovative academics implementing new ways of teaching, we cultivate a supportive learning environment. Through interactive learning activities, effective assessment, and feedback, we prepare students to thrive and emerge as leaders in statistical data science.
