About This Opportunity 

We have an exciting opportunity to contribute to teaching, research, and service as a Lecturer in Food Science/Technology with the School of Agriculture and Food Sustainability. You will be responsible for teaching into undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the Food Science and Technology programs at St Lucia campus and may be required to teach at Gatton campus.

At this level you may coordinate or lead the activities of other staff and contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students. As a teaching and research academic at level B will aspire to achieve national recognition in their field of research.

Key responsibilities will include: 

  • Contribute to the development of new programs and course material, by consulting with program advisors and stakeholders, ensuring courses are engaging, relevant and contemporary.

  • Teach across different settings and actively contribute towards educational practice and innovative curriculum design including online learning and alternative teaching methods.

  • Coordinate courses, prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials, and undertake assessment and marking for undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

  • Maintain and improve the quality of courses as measured through evaluation instruments to meet industry and educational standards.

  • Provide high-quality academic counselling and adhere to University Rules in teaching.

  • Develop an independent and/or team research program to achieve national recognition and impact in the research area.

  • Collaborate on joint research projects, seek and manage external research funding.

  • Maintain an active and effective record of publishing in high quality national research journals, other appropriate refereed publications and conference publications.

  • Review and draw upon best practice research methodologies.

  • Prepare research publications and progress reports and participate in regular meetings to discuss project objectives, methodology and outcomes.

  • Contribute to the supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students.

  • Manage employee performance, resolving conflicts and ensuring correct remuneration.

  • Liaise with Human Resources for employee changes.

  • Actively develop partnerships by fostering relationships with colleagues, industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

  • Shows leadership of self and others through mentoring and collaboration.

  • Efficiently manage allocated internal service roles and processes, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.

This is a part-time (60%), fixed-term position until June 2027.

At Academic level B, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $106,079.67 - $125,687.99, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $124,113.21 - $147,054.95 annually.

About You  

Applicants should possess a PhD in food science/technology.

Additionally, you will demonstrate:

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and teach innovative course material in the areas of food preservation, food microbiology and food product development, and to deliver information in a variety of formats at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

  • Experience in course coordination and contribution to the development and continuous innovation of new programs, curriculum design and course material in the discipline area. 

  • Demonstrated expert knowledge in food science, including a scholarly research track record of publications in peer-reviewed, leading multi-disciplinary journals.

  • Growing record of effectively supervising postgraduate research students from Honours to PhD.

  • An ability to establish effective relationships and to represent and promote food science and technology at a university and wider community level, including industry, government and professional bodies.

  • Research interests that complement those of other staff members as outlined on the School website would be desirable.

  • Experience in undertaking internal and external service roles, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.
