This opportunity is offered in accordance with section 31 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA) and the University is therefore only seeking female candidates.

Overview

ECU is seeking an academic aspiring to be a member of the teaching and research team at a university recognised internationally for its excellent quality of education and research.

The School of Engineering at Edith Cowan University (ECU) is the sole provider of aeronautical and aviation education at university level within Western Australia. The school was established in 1992 and it has been one of the fastest growing engineering schools in the nation with a strong track record of success in developing and delivering quality engineering and aviation programs that have strong alignment with industry and promote community and environmental sustainability.

ECU has been ranked in the Top 151-175 in the 2023 Times Higher Education World University Rankings for engineering and technology. Furthermore, Engineering at ECU has been rated as above world standard in the 2018 Excellence in Research for Australia evaluation by the Australia Research Council. The school provides a supportive and collegial work environment and enjoys outstanding teaching and research facilities that are among the best in Australia.

The School of Engineering is currently seeking an experienced and suitably qualified person to assist with the delivery and further development of the aviation and aeronautics curricula. The successful applicant will have a strong background in aviation or aeronautical engineering teaching and research as well as interest to work with a multidisciplinary academic team within the school.

In addition to addressing the selection criteria for this position, applicants will also need to demonstrate personal attributes that are congruent with the University’s values of Integrity, Respect, Rational Inquiry, Personal Excellence and Courage.

This job position is located at the Joondalup Campus, approximately 25 km north of the Perth CBD. Joondalup is a rapidly growing regional centre and supports a wide range of facilities for business, living and recreation. It is close to the northern beaches and accessible via freeway and rapid rail connections to Perth city.

At ECU you will be encouraged and supported to further develop your career in several ways including tailored mentoring and networking opportunities both within the school and across the University. The University has a strong focus on being inclusive, flexible, and relevant and we offer dedicated schemes to remove obstacles and enable career development and progression. ECU offers and promotes employees having flexible working arrangements that help you manage your work and life responsibilities. Additionally, the self-directed nature of an academic career allows a level of flexibility outside of timetabled commitments.

As a proud member of the Athena SWAN Charter, Women in STEM Decadal Plan Champion and a WGEA Employer of Choice for Gender Equality, ECU is committed to removing barriers to gender equity in the workplace. We aim to attract and retain those who have chosen a pathway in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM); qualified female candidates are encouraged to apply.

Through a range of strategies outlined in our Athena SWAN Action Plan and the ECU Gender Equality Strategy 2019-2021 we are working to breakdown structural and cultural barriers and driving diversity in higher education and research. The application process for Athena SWAN accreditation identified areas of priority for the university which included recruitment of women in the areas of STEM. With participation rates for female academics in STEM at 24%, and only 4% in the School of Engineering in 2017, the School of Engineering set targets and committed to strategies that would increase female staff academic numbers within the school and address the gender imbalance. The School successfully met its first target of 12% in December 2019 and continues to participate in university initiatives to improve gender balance in Engineering and Aviation.
