The Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences is a leader in agricultural, food and veterinary science education and research in Australia.

The faculty comprises the Melbourne Veterinary School and the School of Agriculture and Food. The faculty operates across three campuses: Parkville, Werribee and Dookie. We acknowledge and pay respect to the traditional owners of the lands upon which these campuses are situated, the Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung peoples and the Yorta Yorta Nation. In addition to education and research, the faculty operates a veterinary hospital at Werribee, a broadacre farm at Dookie, and an equine hospital in Shepparton.


About the Role
The Lecturer Animal Science will provide excellence in teaching and research at the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences. Working with the School of Agriculture and Food, this position will contribute to teaching and learning in the areas of Animal and Agricultural Sciences and will be responsible for coordinating subjects and teaching into undergraduate and postgraduate degrees including but not limited to conducting tutorials, lectures, and workshops in a variety of settings.

The Lecturer will actively participate in leadership and service both within and outside the University and broader community and be an effective member of committees at the Department, School and Faculty level as appropriate to the level of appointment.

This position will be primarily located at the Parkville campus of the University of Melbourne but will be expected to teach and to attend meetings, seminars and conferences at other campuses or facilities from time to time.

Responsibilities include:

  • Making independent and innovative contributions to teaching and learning at all levels, which enhance student learning and experience
  • Delivering teaching in a variety of settings by conducting tutorials, lectures, practical demonstrations, seminars, computer-based learning exercises and laboratory-based workshops which may extend to individual consultations and provision of online resources
  • Leading by example and ensure the values, standards and expectations for appropriate positive behaviour in the workplace and the best interests of a leading University are upheld as well as the University’s commitment to a diverse and inclusive workplace
  • Making independent contributions to the development of an integrated course, including innovative programs and curriculum design


About You
You will have the capacity to work independently and as a member of a team to deliver high-quality teaching outcomes and possess a high level organisational skills and record keeping capabilities as well as well as the ability to prioritise a range of tasks, manage time effectively and meet deadlines in a busy environment. You will have well-developed interpersonal and skills to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders including professional and industry bodies, and an ability to tailor information to different audiences in a diverse environment.

You will also have:

  • A PhD qualification awarded in Animal Science or a relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated tertiary level teaching experience with the ability to teach innovative programs for learning at all levels, and under a variety of settings including online learning and curriculum course design, as well as academic mentoring to students
  • Demonstrated capacity to obtain funding to further develop teaching and learning
  • A scholarly approach to teaching as evidenced by demonstrated skills in teaching practice including analysis of learning needs, identification of appropriate approaches to teaching, developing ways to improve practice by obtaining and analysing feedback and maintaining currency with professional practice
  • A record in attracting and providing supervision to completion of graduate research students and demonstrated capacity to mentor and guide junior staff in their career pathways and development
