About the team

The School of Earth Sciences is a group of internationally recognised educators and researchers who undertake broad-ranging research in the Earth Sciences, both fundamental and applied. Western Australia relies heavily on its mineral, energy, groundwater and coastal marine resources which drives strong research programs in the School focusing on scientific discovery and evidence-based management of these resources. 

Making the most of the unique geology of Western Australia, the School has a well-established reputation in Archean–Proterozoic geology and geochemistry, mineral geoscience including exploration, hydrogeology, geodata analytics and basin analysis. The magnificent coastline of WA facing the Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean also supports major strengths in coastal processes, physical oceanography and Antarctic geoscience.

About the opportunity

You will contribute to the academic environment and success of the School. You will support and extend the School’s teaching, research and outreach capabilities in geoscience and more specifically in igneous petrology and geochemistry. You will be expected to deliver high-quality learning experiences for students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and contribute to fieldwork teaching.

You also will be required to develop and manage an independent research program that has an impact in the field, establishing collaborative research with national and international partners and industry and government end users, and actively participate in research training of honours, masters and PhD students.

To be considered for this opportunity, you will demonstrate:

  • A PhD in igneous petrology and geochemistry or a closely related field
  • Capacity to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in geoscience including field-based teaching
  • A strong track record of high-quality research with impact, relative to opportunity, in geoscience
  • Evidence of potential to generate and grow an externally funded innovative research program from diverse funding sources, including from competitive grants and industry
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated science communication skills
  • Ability and willingness to mentor and supervise students
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team and deliver timely outcomes
