THE ROLE

Opportunity for a Lecturer to contribute to the teaching of courses offered by the Discipline of Geography and Planning. 

  • Salary Package: Level B (from $108,111 - $ 119,994) (pro rata = $64,866.60 - $71,996.40) p.a. plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading    

  • Appointment Type: 4 years fixed term part-time (0.6 FTE) - Teaching focused

  • Macquarie University (North Ryde) location

The Discipline of Geography and Planning, in the Macquarie School of Social Science, is seeking to appoint a Lecturer to contribute to the teaching of course offered by the Discipline of Geography and Planning. The Lecturer will be responsible for convening and teaching urban geography and planning courses.

About You

You will have completed a PhD, in geography, urban planning or a closely related discipline. You will have experience as an Early Career Researcher who is able to work both in a team and independently and engage with stakeholders ranging from PhD candidates to senior academics and practitioners in a multi-disciplinary context. You will have demonstrated academic knowledge in the discipline and a commitment and capability to deliver high quality learning and teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. You will have the capacity to independently conduct lectures, tutorials, assessment, and exam marking, be able to demonstrate evidence of your teaching quality and contribute to unit and course level teaching administration. If you are an excellent communicator with a proactive nature, flexible, able to work in teams and have excellent interpersonal, organisational and time management skills, then this is a role you will thrive in and a discipline you will enjoy working with.

The Discipline of Geography and Planning, in the Macquarie School of Social Sciences, is a leading centre of geographical and planning education and research. The Discipline delivers innovative teaching and research oriented at making societies and places more just, liveable, and inclusive.
 

We offer a Bachelor of Planning and Master of Planning, accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia and a Graduate Certificate of Environmental Planning and major in Geography. We also contribute to the interdisciplinary Bachelor of Social Sciences.
 

Our researchers conduct adventurous and innovative empirical work across national and international case studies. While our research is theoretically innovative and has made important contributions to global debates in geography and urban planning scholarship, we are equally dedicated to addressing “real world” problems and working towards a more just and sustainable future. We have we have established research expertise in four broad areas:

  • Cities, Planning and Governance

  • Critical Development and Indigenous Geographies

  • Cultural and Political Geographies

  • Environments, Societies, and Power.

We have strong research and teaching connections with colleagues for across the Macquarie School of Social Science, which also includes the disciplines of Anthropology, Politics and International Relations, and Sociology.

Essential:

  • A PhD in geography, urban planning, or closely related discipline

  • Demonstrated ability to teach and administer undergraduate and postgraduate geography and urban planning units

  • Capability with teaching online student cohorts using Blackboard, Turnitin or similar online learning systems

  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills

  • High-level organisational skills translated into the ability to prioritise workload, meet deadlines and to prepare reports detailing progression milestones
     

Desirable:

  • Experience working in local government or the planning profession

  • Experience in teaching urban economics, housing, and development planning

  • Eligibility to join the Planning Institute of Australia
