We have an exciting and unique opportunity for a for an experienced Mining Engineering Lecturer to join our world class Teaching & Research team in the WA School of Mines: Minerals, Energy & Chemical Engineering, operating from Curtin’s campus in the historic mining town of Kalgoorlie.

Nestled 600 kilometres east of Perth in the heart of the Goldfields-Esperance region, the dynamic city of Kalgoorlie offers a tapestry of rich heritage, breath-taking outback landscapes, diverse recreational opportunities, and a thriving arts and culture scene.

The backbone of the local economy lies in the mining industry, which boasts a rich mineral base including gold, nickel, lithium, and iron ore.  In addition to mining, emerging sectors such as renewable energy, tourism, mining education and innovation, mining processing facilities, and improved transport logistics have been identified as key areas of growth.

Kalgoorlie lies on the traditional lands of the Wangkatja group of peoples and was established in 1893 during the WA gold rushes.  Mining companies established in the Kalgoorlie area work with Curtin to provide students practical, on-ground opportunities as well as research avenues and funding.

The successful candidate will have academic qualifications and practical experience in Mining Engineering in one or more of the areas listed below: The role contributes to both teaching (in-person and on-line) and research to develop and educate students who wish to have domestic and global impact in the resources sector.  The balance of teaching and research activities being variable by agreement through Curtin’s Career and Performance Planning process.  The incumbent will carry out on-going activities to maintain and develop scholarly activities relevant to Mining Engineering.  The incumbent will also be expected to undertake administrative and leadership roles consistent with the position.

Applicants with specialist expertise in any area of Mining Engineering will be considered for appointment, with candidates demonstrating expertise in the following areas being considered particularly desirable:

  • Rock drilling and blasting.
  • Mine automation.

The successful applicant is expected to demonstrate a growing profile in teaching, research, and service/leadership.  They are likely to lead or coordinate the work of other staff.


Your new role
As a Lecturer, you will be responsible for:
Teaching
  • Deliver high-quality teaching to undergraduate, honours, and postgraduate students, fostering ongoing reflective improvement.
  • Conduct tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, and other sessions to facilitate student learning.
  • Assess and provide feedback on student work, contributing to curriculum innovation and content design.
Research
  • Develop an independent research program in an area of mining engineering aligned with the School’s research strengths.
  • Building an industry-engaged research program alongside pursuing fundamental research questions will be ideal.
  • Disseminate research findings through seminars, workshops, and publications in high-quality outlets.
  • Provide effective supervision for research students and aim for national recognition in the field.
  • Manage administrative tasks related to research activities.

This position is

based at our Curtin Kalgoorlie campus

.  Support packages may be offered to the successful candidate.

Periodic travel between Curtin’s Kalgoorlie and Perth campuses will be required for teaching, research, and administrative purposes.

Essential

  • Doctoral qualification in Mining Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated high level teaching skill and a demonstrated reflective approach to teaching delivery.
  • A strong understanding of pedagogical theory and contemporary educational practice relevant to the discipline and a record of contribution to scholarship in teaching.
  • An established record of research outputs/creative works in high quality refereed academic journals/outlets consistent with the discipline.
  • A history of successful competitive grant applications and/or demand-driven industry funding.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise higher degree research students.
  • Demonstrated experience / capacity to undertake unit coordination role.
  • Demonstrated high level communication and interpersonal skills with a commitment to the development of a collegial and supportive working environment and the ability to interact with students and staff with cross cultural sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated commitment to applying relevant and applicable policies, procedures, and legislation in the day-to-day performance of the functions of this position.
