About the position

The Department of Archaeology and History of La Trobe University (Melbourne, Australia) invites applications for a full-time continuing lectureship in archaeology.

We welcome applications from archaeologists who work on the intersections between complex human societies and the environment and climate.  This is intentionally defined broadly, and we welcome any regional and period specialisations that add to or complement existing strengths within the department. The successful candidate should also either have an active fieldwork program, or demonstrable potential to develop one in the future.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop research programs and funding proposals, and to undertake and disseminate primary research. They will be expected to teach 2-3 subjects annually. They will also have opportunities to develop and build new curriculum.

About the Archaeology Program

The Archaeology Program at La Trobe is one of the pre-eminent Archaeology programs in Australia with research that spans the entire history of humanity, from its origins to the present day.  We are internationally recognised for our expertise, with a program-wide focus upon issues relating to climate, landscape, and the environment.  Currently, we have active research programs around the world, including in the Middle East, South Africa, and South Asia, as well as a particular focus upon the archaeology of south-eastern Australia. 

We are one of the leading providers of archaeological education in Australia and pride ourselves on our excellent connections to industry and in delivering hands-on training, where students acquire transferrable skills in the classroom, laboratory and field. We offer a Bachelor of Archaeology, a major taught as part of the Bachelor of Arts, and several postgraduate coursework and research degrees.

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position, you will have;

  • PhD in archaeology or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience of effective teaching in a university environment.
  • Evidence of high quality and/or high impact research conducted and published or otherwise disseminated, relative to opportunity.
  • Sound analytical skills with an ability to communicate complex information clearly both orally and in writing.
  • High level organisational skills with the ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, initiate and follow-up actions, all with minimal or no supervision.
  • High level oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with people from a diverse range of backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively with staff and students from a diverse range of backgrounds.
  • Evidence of the ability to work as a member of a team in a co-operative and collegial manner.
