This role sits within our Legal & Compliance function to support the ongoing development and operation of the University’s privacy compliance framework.

Why Your Role Matters:
UNSW has over 7,000 staff and manages large volumes of personal information across our teaching, research and commercial functions. 

Reporting to the Head of Compliance & Controlled Entities Law, you will act as a subject matter expert on all privacy and information lifecycle legal issues and act as a trusted advisor to provide legal and compliance advice to the academic and professional staff of the University.

You will work closely with our data governance, cyber security and records colleagues to effectively implement the University’s privacy management plan, provide expert advice to support data risk minimisation, promote strong privacy governance and uphold the University's reputation for protecting and respecting personal information.

Who You Are:

We’re seeking a legal professional with a background in administrative law and the confidence to autonomously advise on privacy and information lifecycle matters. You will hold the following skills and experience:

  • Tertiary qualifications in law with 4-6+ years’ post qualification experience at a law firm and/or in house legal team.
  • Admission to the Supreme Court of NSW and a current practising certificate.
  • Experience in providing expert legal advice on privacy and information lifecycle matters, preferably under both NSW and Commonwealth laws.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and interests across complex matters.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build stakeholder relationships across the University and with external networks & regulators.
  • A collegiate and proactive client- centric approach to generate new and innovative approaches to solve complex matters.
