About This Opportunity 

The University of Queensland’s Legal Services is seeking two enthusiastic and reliable Law Clerks to assist UQ's legal team. Training will be provided to the successful candidates.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus , renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Work under supervision to provide legal related administrative support to the lawyers for the delivery of legal services

  • Conduct legal research and compile research findings for Legal Counsels

  • Prepare, review and compile briefs, legal documents, agreements, memorandums, reports and evidence

  • Assist with basic courtroom related duties as required.

  • Attend hearings to take notes as required.

  • Provision of legal related administrative support within the office

  • Apply day to day office procedures

  • Undertake electronic filing

  • Respond to emails/calls

  • Undertake records management tasks

  • Respond to routine inquiries

  • Use of standard word processing, data entry and record entry applications

  • Undertake data entry and retrieval

  • Other tasks as requested by the supervisor

Key Stakeholder and Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain strong and effective working relationships with internal clients, team members and external stakeholders.

  • Work collaboratively in a team environment and contribute towards team outcomes.

About Legal Services  

Led by the General Counsel, UQ Legal Services is responsible for the delivery of legal services to the Vice-Chancellor, executive management, and other key decision makers at UQ in order to support the achievement of UQ’s strategic objectives while protecting its interests. The General Counsel reports to the Chief Operating Officer and is part of the Chief Operating Officer’s senior management team.

UQ Legal Services has 4 major practice areas comprising: Commercial and Advisory contracts; Property and Projects; Dispute Resolution and Workplace Relations and Research.

The Legal Services team provides legal advice on a wide range of areas, including:

  • commercial and contract law matters;

  • property law matters;

  • information technology matters;

  • dispute resolution and litigation;

  • administrative law, including advice to ensure defensible decisions by key decision makers;

  • student disciplinary and appeals matters;

  • research misconduct investigations and processes;

  • research related contracts and advices

  • governance issues, regulatory issues and statutory interpretation;

  • Corporations Law matters;

  • bequests and gifts to UQ;

  • intellectual property issues.

About You  

The successful candidate will be a motivated individual with excellent communication skills. You will demonstrate a willingness to learn and develop new skills, prioritise tasks and meet deadlines. Further criteria includes:

Essential

  • Demonstrated ability to undertake thorough legal research and the ability to present this in a well-formed and logical manner

  • Thorough knowledge of legal databases and services

  • Completion of year 12 or completion of Certificates I or II in a relevant area or an equivalent combination of experience/training

  • Interest in working in a legal team

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Customer/client service skills and telephone techniques

  • Computer literacy skills and experience using the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).

  • Effective time management skills

  • Attention to detail

What We Can Offer 

This is a part-time (0.8 FTE), fixed-term position for 3 years at the HEW 2.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $56,707 - $58,070, plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $66,942 - $67,942 per annum.
