Background

La Trobe University recognises the important contribution that people from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds make to the Australian community.

As such, we are pleased to offer three specific scholarships in 2023.

These are for applicants who are asylum seekers or refugees holding a TPV, BV(E) and (A) or SHEV.

The scholarships are for undergraduate studies and will cover all tuition costs and include a AUD $7000 annual cost-of-living bursary for the normal duration of the degree.

Are you eligible to apply?
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be residing in Australia
  • Be deemed as a person seeking asylum or a refugee holding either one of the following:
  • Temporary Protection Visa (TPV) (V785)
  • Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (SHEV) (V790)
  • Bridging Visa E (BVE) (050 or 051)
  • Bridging Visa A (010)
  • Temporary Humanitarian Concern (786)
  • Temporary Humanitarian Stay Visa (449)
    • Be intending to enrol and commence studies in Semester 1 2023 as a full-time student in an undergraduate degree offered by La Trobe University (Open Universities Australia, third-party provider and online courses excluded).
    • Be able to demonstrate financial disadvantage, leadership potential and a strong commitment to studies.


    Recipients of the scholarship shall be selected by the University based on their:

    •Completion and submission of the online application form;

    •Experience of disadvantage, as deemed by the University;

    •Demonstrated leadership potential;

    •Demonstrated commitment to study;

    •Academic merit and English language proficiency may be considered as part of the selection criteria.

    Humanitarian Scholarship recipients will be chosen by a selection committee comprised of representatives from La Trobe International, AccessAbility Hub and a representative from a community organisation.

    All eligible applicants will be contacted approximately 1-2 weeks after the closing date of this scholarship. Selected scholarship applicants will then be invited to complete a full course application.


    Recipient obligations
    • maintain satisfactory academic progress
    • meet with relevant University support staff when necessary
    • Inform the University of any visa changes
