Informatics Team Lead

About the opportunity

The Informatics Team Lead is a senior leadership role in the Sydney Informatics Hub (SIH), a University Core Research Facility serving academics and researchers across all faculties. The Informatics Team Lead will lead the SIH Informatics Team, managing the SIH program for supporting researchers across the University in their data science, software engineering, modelling, simulation, visualisation, bioinformatics, and high-performance computing (HPC) needs, and have responsibility for building relationships and opportunities across the University, and externally, in these key research support service areas.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • report to the Academic Director within the Sydney Informatics Hub

  • provide effective management and leadership to SIH Group Leads and their reports across data science, bioinformatics, software engineering and high-performance research computing

  • manage the implementation of the strategic plan, design and development of key objectives and goals for the Sydney Informatics Hub in the areas covered by the Informatics Team

  • develop and implement stakeholder engagement and communication plans designed to meet key needs of internal and external stakeholders to the University

  • ensure effective multi project management and project delivery for the Informatics Team

  • ensure service delivery for the Informatics Team, project governance and implementation of key aspects of strategy under the Sydney Informatics Hub activities

  • work collaboratively with other parts of Sydney Informatics Hub to build and develop an engineering and entrepreneurial culture in support of data science across the university.

About you

  • tertiary education (preferably to PhD level) in a computational area of study (data science, computer science, computational statistics, engineering, physics, bioinformatics, for example)

  • extensive management and leadership experience within a technology environment

  • demonstrated client management, senior stakeholder relationship, group advocacy, and strategic planning skills

  • demonstrated understanding of modern data science software and tools, from high performance computing to cloud computing, information systems and range of existing commercial products used for data management and analytics

  • extensive experience across multi project management including expertise in use of project management systems for tracking milestones, deadlines, staff/resource allocation and availability across multiple projects running simultaneous

  • expert knowledge of modern data-centric programing languages including one of Python, R, and development languages including one of C++ or Java

  • excellent communication skills, with high-level reporting, presentation and negotiation abilities and the capacity to identify and influence critical stakeholders to gain support for complex proposals/ideas.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position.
