About the opportunity

The Faculty of Medicine and Health is the largest faculty in the University and contains seven academic schools, including Sydney Medical School (SMS). SMS has clinical schools located in metropolitan and rural campuses. The clinical schools have strong collaborative relationships with the health services within communities in which they are located. The faculty operates across three major metropolitan health precincts, and one rural/regional precinct, where University facilities are co-located with hospitals and medical research institutes. Each precinct is a centre of multi-professional and multi-disciplinary education and research.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding academic and or clinical leader who is a medical practitioner at the level of Associate Professor or Professor, to be the Head of Clinical School, Central Clinical School. The Central Clinical School (CCS) is part of the FMH Sydney Precinct and is closely aligned with Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA). RPA is the main teaching hospital of the clinical school and offers a huge scope of clinical exposure to common and rare chronic medical illnesses. For basic clinical skills training, the clinical school at RPA has comprehensive clinical skills laboratories, including facilities for the development of advanced levels of consultative skills and surgical procedural skills training.  CCS is located within our new Susan Wakil Health Building , a purpose-built facility that includes state-of-the-art simulation rooms, four lecture theatres and an array of other specialty spaces and equipment for our students.

The Head of the Clinical School, CCS, is a senior management position within SMS. The Head’s role incorporates leadership of medical education in the clinical school, research, and community engagement within the clinical school. The position forms part of the SMS Executive, and the appointee will represent SMS as required on faculty committees and/or subcommittees. The Head of Clinical School will play a pivotal role in developing the University’s contribution to the FMH Sydney Precinct and will need to work closely with SLHD in maintaining and strengthening the partnership to achieve the SMS and FMH educational and research objectives.

The Head’s primary role is to implement faculty strategy including overseeing academic staff performance and career development, leadership of medical education and research training, facilitation of research collaborations by clinical school staff, community engagement and promotion of a positive safety culture. The successful candidate will be supported by the newly configured professional staff structure that allows a broader strategic role to be developed in partnership with SLHD.

About you (skills, capabilities and experience)

The successful candidate must be eligible for registration in NSW as a medical practitioner and have a PhD, or other higher education qualification in addition to your medical degree. You will have a national or international reputation in your field, a sound understanding of the learning needs of medical professionals and a communication style which is supportive of a positive workplace culture. In depth knowledge and understanding of the key strategic issues in higher education sector is essential, as is experience in leadership, people management within health or higher education, financial and operational management practices. The successful candidate must have experience working in successfully in partnership with professional staff and the capacity to develop and manage a wide network of established relationships with key health partners, academics, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders, that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of the School, Faculty and University. The level of appointment will be determined during the selection process, based on experience and track record.

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered a 5-year fixed-term position on a full-time basis, with the possibility for renewal subject to assessment of performance. The appointment is also subject to completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees.

Relocation assistance will also be provided if required. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position

The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications. If applicable, candidates may be offered an additional clinical appointment in NSW Sydney Local Health District as a Clinical Academic.
