About the opportunity

The Head of Business Intelligence and Enterprise Data leads a diverse group of technical experts to collect and refine the University’s Institutional data to enable access data that supports development of insights, reporting, analytics, and engagement with staff and students. This role is critical in establishing the appropriate governance and control frameworks for data, ensuring compliance with relevant legislative and regulatory controls whilst enabling data driven decisions and actions. 

The Head of Business Intelligence and Enterprise Data is accountable for developing, translating, and implementing the work area strategy and related business plans into operational activity, managing the utilisation of resources across programs, processes, and work activity. The incumbent has the autonomy to make decisions that relate to the achievement of operating performance objectives and goals through the delivery of day-to-day services, advice, or solutions by the work area to stakeholders across the University. The incumbent uses judgement to ensure operating activity maintains compliance with governance and controls, and the mitigation of risks. The Head of Business Intelligence and Enterprise Data will utilise considerable experience, business acumen and problem-solving expertise to make decisions and recommendations on broad and complex issues which impact on the operations of the organisation. The position has leadership responsibilities to guide, develop and manage a team of professional staff, including managing performance and development, and for the delegation of work activity. 

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • manage the development and implementation of Data Strategy for Institutional data 

  • lead the development of the vision and strategy for data across the University, raising awareness of the value and impact of data assets. Engage people in envisioning the opportunities for data, the importance of managing the University data as an asset, and critical risks to mitigate and manage as it relates to data

  • manage the overall development and implementation of data policy to ensure data is managed in a secure and appropriate manner

  • lead the development and implementation of Data Governance 

  • communicate a vision for Data Governance that empowers people accessing data and communicates the relevance and effectiveness of the University approach to Data Governance

  • lead delivery of projects to curate data assets to enable data driven actions and decisions 

  • lead the development of business cases to secure investment to curate data sources aligned to University priorities

  • curate a suite of Business Intelligence solutions that enable self-serve reporting 

  • engage with people across the University to understand their reporting and data needs  

  • lead the development and ongoing management of dashboards and reporting to enable broad access to key metrics and performance data

  • establish and communicate a vision for data engineering that capitalises on advancements in technology to develop new data sources with a focus on realising value.

About you

  • proven management experience at a senior level; together with flexibility, capacity to adapt to changing circumstances and environments and, when necessary, navigating through ambiguity 

  • demonstrated experience in the supervision, training, mentoring and performance management of staff; and experience managing and resolving a diverse range of HR issues 

  • financial management experience and literacy, experience managing budgets and controlling income and expenditure for a project

  • postgraduate qualifications in analytics, data, or other relevant field and extensive relevant experience or an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience 

  • excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with a variety of matters

  • ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work 

  • excellent time and workload management skills with demonstrated ability to prioritise effectively, manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and achieve required outcomes and effectively deliver results

  • strong business acumen and strategic thinking skills together with effective leadership and people management skills

  • effective at managing a diverse group of key stakeholders on large or complex projects and the ability to develop/cultivate productive relationships with industry providers and key users

  • extensive technical skills in developing enterprise data platforms, providing significant technical training and support to analysts and developers.
