(Level A) $71,401 to $96,007 per annum plus an employer contribution of 17% superannuation may apply.

Full time, fixed term position available for 2.5 years.

The Grant Funded Researcher will conduct research, supervision, and administrative work in the Assessment, design and operation of battery-supported electric mining vehicles and machinery' project funded by the Future Battery Industries Cooperative Research Centre (FBICRC).

We seek a candidate with a PhD in electrical engineering, computer engineering, operation research, or applied mathematics (with research experience in power systems and smart grids) to work with us in a unique project funded by the FBICRC involving several leading Australian mining companies. This project is expected to provide the Australian mining industry with a suite of decision-making tools and information that will aid their transition towards the use of battery-supported electric vehicles (BEVs) and associated stationary machinery in their mining operations. Your contributions to this work would help a critical industry achieve its net-zero emission goal and cost reduction with a tangible impact on the climate and health of mining workers.

As a Grant Funded researcher, you will be working with a great team to conduct independent research on developing optimal algorithms for technology selection, sizing and scheduling of battery-supported mining mobile fleet. Various technologies, including trolley-assist charging and battery swapping, will be considered in the modelling. You will be responsible for the dissemination of project results, innovations and outcomes through journal and conference publications, white papers, technology development and policy engagement, and the preparation of quarterly reports to the FBICRC. You will assist the project leaders in industry engagement activities, project promotion and future grant development, and leading short courses and workshops. You will also have an opportunity to co-supervise PhD students in this project.  A one-time research allowance of $5000 for legitimate research expenses (such as attending an international conference) will also be provided.

During this project, some travel may be required to visit project partners' mining operations located in remote areas of Australia.

To be successful you will need:

  • A PhD or recognised significant experience in electrical engineering, computer engineering, applied mathematics or operations research with prior experience in power system and smart grid.
  • Experience in mathematical optimisation, preferably with applications to the power system, smart grid, or electric vehicle powertrain.
  • Advanced programming skills, preferably in Python.
  • Strong interpersonal and organisational skills and strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion, and ability to contribute to the diversity of the School community.
