Chemistry at the University of Adelaide has been consistently ranked well above world class in the Excellence in Research for Australia national audits. The department has two major research strengths: Energy, Materials and Environmental Chemistry and Medicinal and Biological Chemistry. These research strengths are underpinned by an extensive portfolio of laboratories, world-class materials characterisation and analytical facilities that support a vibrant postgraduate research community and partnerships with national and international research consortia.
About you
If successful, you will be involved in research to develop new photocatalysts for the hydrogenation of saturated organic molecules. Photocatalysis is a potentially cost-effective method to drive the chemical transformation of organic waste chemicals. In collaboration with an industry partner, Petronas, and as part of a larger team located in Chemistry, you will conduct research on the synthesis of photocatalyst materials and assess their activity in reactors to be designed and commissioned as part of the project. Experience in reactor development, flow chemistry and gas chromatography are highly desired. Important outcomes are related to combing both hydrogen evolution and organic chemical hydrogenation within a single system.
You are expected to be capable of undertaking your own research as part of a growing team supervised by a group of three academics in Chemistry, to take a project leadership role within the team, and to interact successfully with students, collaborators, supervisors and funders. You should have excellent written and oral communication skills with the desire to seek your own independent funding by capitalising on the opportunities provided.
Applicants should have a PhD in Chemistry, with demonstrated expertise in synthesis and characterisation of solid-state materials, and experience in designing and performing (photo)catalytic experiments.
Selection Criteria
- PhD in Chemistry.
- Advanced skills and experience in the synthesis and characterisation of solid-state materials.
- Experience in designing and performing (photo)catalytic experiments, including the design and commission reactors suitable for (photo)catalytic flow reactions with both gas phase and liquid phase products.
- Complete analytical analysis skills including: X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, NMR spectroscopy, gas chromatography, liquid chromatography.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills (for conference presentations, manuscript preparation, grant preparation, and industry reports).
- Ability to undertake a project leadership role within a team, and to interact with students, collaborators, supervisors, and industry stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to manage the research activities of Honours and/or post-graduate students.
