  • Full time, fixed term until 31st December 2023

  • Base salary $100,032 to $108,979 + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

As a Frontend Developer, you will develop, deploy, support, maintain, and continuously improve the frontend of national data analytics platforms and services. Your contribution will enable life scientists to perform research in areas of national significance. This includes saving Australia’s threatened species, treating aggressive cancers, sustainability, food security and other areas in the environmental, agricultural, and biomedical sciences.

This is part of a ~$54M project, funded by the Australian Government (National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) via Bioplatforms Australia) and partners across Australia. You will collaborate with a diverse range of national and commercial organisations, including the Australian BioCommons, Australia’s Tier1 high-performance computing facilities of NCI and Pawsey, commercial cloud platforms of AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, and life sciences platforms operated by partners in the EU and USA.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • work within a dynamic team, reporting to the Australian BioCommons and Bioinformatics Group Lead in the SIH

  • provide specialist advice and guidance around existing frameworks and infrastructure that current national research platforms are built upon, such as Galaxy Australia and Australian Apollo Portal

  • develop and execute a software engineering plan that builds robust, scalable, and maintainable services in collaboration with the BioCommons Platforms and BioCloud teams

  • build web-based platforms used by researchers daily, utilising frontend and middle stack development processes

  • collaborate with backend developers, high performance computing, commercial cloud, and UX/UI specialists

  • work collaboratively with other parts of the SIH to build and develop an entrepreneurial culture in the support of data science and informatics across the university.

About you

  • tertiary qualifications in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Bioinformatics and/or extensive equivalent industry experience

  • knowledge of modern software engineering practices, including documentation, testing, continuous integration, automated software stack deployment, data management and software version control (such as Git)

  • demonstrated familiarity with dataset extraction, manipulation, and integration, including experience with SQL and NoSQL databases

  • experience in full-stack web development using modern JavaScript frameworks such as React or Angular, HTML and CSS skills

  • has a drive to learn and collaborate

  • has a passion to build solutions to support researchers, recognizes key priorities, can manage their time well, potentially working across multiple projects at a time

  • entrepreneurial approach, with excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills.
