Fixed-term position for two (2) years.

Contribute to the project “Development of glass components for electrospray mass spectrometry” as a Material Scientist/Chemist/Physicist/Engineer within the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS) and the School of Physical Sciences at The University of Adelaide.

The vision of the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS) is to pursue a transdisciplinary approach that brings together experimental physicists, chemists, material scientists, engineers, mathematicians, biologists and medical researchers to create new sensing and measurement technologies in order to solve major challenges.

The Photonic Materials and Fibres Group at IPAS, through the School of Physical Sciences, has recently secured funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC) for the development of new glass components together with Trajan Scientific and Medical to enhance the sensitivity of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The project aims to advance fabrication of glass capillaries and tubes with complex and high precision structures to enable both multiplexing ion generation from a single capillary and geometrical matching of the shape of the bore of the tube collecting the emitted ion plume. Mass spectrometry has become an indispensable analytical tool for proteomics and synthetic chemistry and thus the significant enhancement of mass spectrometry sensitivity in this project will accelerate progress in disease research, biomarker discovery and drug development.

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with background in materials science/photonics/physical chemistry/engineering to drive the development and fabrication of the new glass capillaries and tubes.

To be successful you will need:

  • PhD or Masters (by research) or equivalent degree (or thesis submitted) in related relevant area of materials science, photonics, physical chemistry or engineering
  • A commitment to research excellence in science or engineering
  • Demonstrated publication track record in leading scientific journals and conferences
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research in addition to working effectively as a member of a research team
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
