The Bouverie Centre is a Practice-Research-Translation Centre within the School of Psychology and Public Health at La Trobe University. The Centre is also a Statewide Specialist Mental Health Service within Victoria’s public mental health system. The Bouverie Centre has a vision of healthy relationships in families, organisations and communities and integrates clinical family therapy, practice and service development, academic training in family therapy and a rapidly developing research program. The Centre receives recurrent funding from the Victorian Department of Health and also generates income through fee-for-service work with health and human services. 

About the position

The Family Practice Consultant & Family Therapist position is a joint workforce training and family therapy role located within the Practice & Service Development (PSD) program. The PSD program has an ambitious agenda of building the capability of practitioners and services to work effectively with families and ultimately improving the experiences of care and outcomes for those receiving services. The Family Practice Consultant component of the role involves working with our organisational clients to design and deliver training and implementation support packages to improve practice in services locally, nationally and internationally. The complementary clinical component of the role involves providing family therapy for families presenting with mental health difficulties. This may include being a member of specialist clinical teams designed to develop innovative ways of working with families. The position involves a 60/40% split between the Family Practice Consultant and Family Therapy roles respectively and reports to a Team Leader within the PSD program.

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position, you will have;

  • An appropriate tertiary qualification in social work, nursing, occupational therapy or psychology and a Post Graduate qualification in Family Therapy and eligibility for Clinical Membership of the Australian Association of Family Therapy.
  • Skills and experience in providing training, consultation, supervision and practice support including through in person and online modalities.
  • Significant practice experience in the health and human services, preferably in the mental health or alcohol and other drugs fields.
  • Highly developed skills in family therapy with a sound knowledge of family-based and systemic approaches and their application in the mental health, alcohol and other drugs or related fields.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to managing projects as a team member or as a project lead, including contribution to the preparation of project and evaluation reports and other relevant documentation.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills with a capacity to work independently, to lead projects and to work as part of a team as required.
  • Current Victorian Driver’s License and a willingness to travel and stay overnight in country Victoria, interstate and overseas.
