The Opportunity

Monash University’s Department of Psychiatry, School of Clinical Sciences is seeking to appoint a sessional Teaching Associate, for students within the Undergraduate Certificate in Mental Health (M0501). The Undergraduate Certificate in Mental Health, a relatively new course is aimed at educating non-mental health workers and professionals working or planning to work with people with mental illnesses, for example, peer support workers, ambulance paramedics, residential care staff, child protection workers and youth workers. It consists of four core units and has CSP funding for 2022. The first intake of students commenced in March 2021 and the course has received new student intake in both semesters of 2022. Other Monash undergraduates have also enrolled in the units as electives.

Undergraduate Certificate in Mental Health has a course structure consisting of 4 online units running in 12-week teaching periods each semester. The plan is to teach in Summer Semester A,2022, Semester 1 and 2, 2023. Most students undertake 2 units per semester. A minority enrol full-time and complete 4 units in one semester.

The Teaching Associate provides a range of academic support for the Undergraduate Certificate in Mental Health predominantly as a unit coordinator for one of the 4 units in the course. This consists of responsibility for the development and review of the unit content and assessment material and coordination duties such as monitoring of discussion forums with appropriate advice from and support of more senior staff. It is expected that the incumbent will also contribute to the development of the overall course curriculum. This position will involve the development and maintenance of excellent working relationships with the internal and external stakeholders with a focus on excellence in process and judgement and the provision of sound and timely advice to support students, staff, and other stakeholders.

  • UMH1201
  • Assist on UMH 1101,1102, 1202

Selection Criteria

Essential criteria:

  • A Bachelors’ Degree or equivalent
  • The role is open to medical, nursing and allied health staff who have worked in and understand mental health systems
  • Experience in teaching and/or supervision of tertiary level students
  • Passion for education and supporting students
  • A research track record appropriate to the level of experience
  • Ability to work positively and cooperatively with students and staff
  • High-level interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • High levels of conscientiousness and commitment to the role

If you also have prior supervision experience, a masters or doctoral qualification or understanding of online teaching and learning platforms, such as Moodle this would also be an advantage.
