The Emerging Technologies Lab is one of Australia’s most exciting research facilities and we want you to be a part of it!
Sitting across both the fast-growing Faculty of IT (FIT) and Monash Art Design & Architecture (MADA), the Emerging Technologies Lab is a fascinating intersection of research areas, undertaking critical interdisciplinary and international research into the social, cultural and experiential dimensions of the design, use and futures of new and emerging technologies.
We investigate an emerging technological environment where automation, artificial intelligence, data and the questions of ethics, responsibility and user experience conflate in unpredictable ways that are important to understand. Our internationally leading researchers bring together high quality theoretical and ethnographic academic scholarship with engagement with external stakeholders, and advocate for the design of better, responsible and ethical futures. Our work advances new theory and ethnographic and futures methodologies drawing from design, anthropology, sociology, and geography. The Lab’s core themes include energy futures, future mobilities, public space, e-waste and design for wellbeing.
The Opportunity
To grapple with these important conceptual spaces we need the best and brightest minds. As such, the Emerging Technologies Lab is pleased to offer this exciting opportunity
To successfully attain this scholarship you should have a background in the social sciences, design and/or human-computer interaction design disciplines, and be committed to undertaking research into the social, cultural and experiential elements of the design, use and futures of emerging technologies. You will participate in the work of the Lab by undertaking your own project, supervised by Associate Professor Yolande Strengers (FIT) and Professor Sarah Pink (MADA) or another, appropriate second supervisor. You will also have opportunities to collaborate in team projects and to connect with the Lab’s international research community.
As part of your proposal, you should outline how your research will contribute to the Digital Energy Futures (DEF) project
The DEF Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage project aims to understand and forecast changing digital lifestyle trends and their impact on future household electricity demand, including at peak times. The project is generating new knowledge by employing digital ethnography and sociological theories to investigate how changing social practices will impact on electricity sector planning. In addition to many academic journal article and book chapter publications, outcomes from DEF to date include: industry comic-strip scenarios of future visions for everyday life; emerging trends and principles for digital energy futures; demand management opportunities to help the sector meet future residential consumption; the Digital Energy Futures documentary film; and future-focused foresights to guide energy forecasting and scenario-building. The successful applicant will build on the DEF research undertaken to date to propose a project within Australia or internationally that will advance future-focused social science and design research for the energy sector. Candidates may also choose to target a particular aspect of the DEF project for further investigation.
The proposal should demonstrate an enthusiasm for theoretical research into human/ non-human and technology futures as well as interest in engaging with innovative qualitative and/or digital and design ethnographic methodologies, such as, ethnographic documentary, design fiction, photography, interviews and observations.
