About Flinders Microscopy and Microanalysis (FMMA)

Flinders Microscopy and Microanalysis (FMMA) is home to cutting edge technology and advanced microscopy, microanalysis, spectroscopy and imaging equipment. These instruments are funded by government grants, Microscopy Australia and the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF). Led by a multi-disciplinary team of expert chemists, biologist, physicists and engineers, these instruments are one-of-a-kind in Australia and often utilised by scientists in Australia and around the world.

About the Role

Flinders University is seeking a diligent Electron and Ion Scattering Spectroscopy Facility Manager, to be responsible for the Metastable Induced Electron Spectroscopy (MIES) and Neutral Impact Collision Ion Scattering Spectroscopy (NICISS) instruments at Flinders Microscopy and Microanalysis (FMMA).

Working closely with the FMMA Director and Facility Leaders, you will ensure the success of research services and programs, the day-to-day running of the facility, analyse samples for academic and industrial research and provide training and technical advice to users.

The Facility Manager, will also be accountable for:

  • Providing day-to-day management of the Electron and Ion Scattering Spectroscopy platforms in FMMA, including microscopy, spectroscopy, sample preparation, instrument operation, maintenance and repair.
  • Contributing to the development and review of ongoing business plans to secure the long-term development of the facility; including assisting in the preparation of funding applications related to the platform.
  • Foster interactions with the commercial sector with the aim of developing mutually productive commercial/scientific outcomes and undertaking contract work.

About You

You will have high level management experience, with the ability to contribute towards the strategic planning and operational protocols of the facility as well as manage physical and financial resources in accordance with University policies and procedures.

The successful candidate will also demonstrate:

  • A PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or equivalent experience.
  • Proven knowledge and proficiency in either Electron or Ion Scattering Spectroscopy.
  • Ability to train new users in the high-level use of state-of-the-art microscopy techniques.
  • Experience with ultra-high vacuum instrument operation and maintenance.
  • Evidence of high-level verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to provide microanalytical advice to a diverse clientele including: internal staff and students; external clients; and industry representatives.
  • Demonstrated strong written communication skills including the ability to maintain scrupulous records and good laboratory practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and coordinate activities, timeframes, and prioritise work flow in a multidisciplinary environment.
