Dr Herbert Gibson Rural Heath Scholarship
This scholarship was created in memory of Dr Herbert Gibson, who studied medicine at Monash University and went on to become an influential figure in medical care and the fight against HIV in the Monash community. It is intended to support medical students from regional and remote areas of Australia who are experiencing financial disadvantage.
Dr Gibson graduated in 1970, and by 1973 he had helped found the Middle Park Clinic in Melbourne where he was central to medical care and the fight against HIV. As his work continued to grow, Dr Gibson began lecturing at Monash on the topics of HIV and blood borne diseases. By 1994, when he was working for the Rural Health General Practice division of Monash University in his hometown of Bendigo, he became the Senior Psychiatric Medical Officer at the Bendigo Health Care Group.
Herbert Gibson devoted his life to the care of the underprivileged, giving medical attention to those who were most in need, and his legacy will inspire others to do the same through this scholarship.
