The Director for the National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction is responsible for making significant contributions to the Centre’s program of Research, its national and international profile and its overall administration and general functioning. The Director will lead the development of successful collaborations, supervise senior staff and postgraduate students, initiate research projects within the Centre, and actively contribute to the Discipline of Public Health teaching programs.
The Director is expected to further enhance the research outputs and community impacts of the Centre’s research and develop, coordinate, and continuously improve the Centres outputs. The incumbent will build on their existing research experience and strategically explore collaborative research opportunities both internal and external to the University.

Key Position Responsibilities

The Director of the National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction will be expected to:

  • Provide national leadership to develop the capacity of the Australian workforce to respond to alcohol and other drug problems.
  • Collaborate with a range of frontline professionals in the alcohol and drug field and their employers across Australia.
  • Contribute to national and state policy on use of alcohol and other drugs.
  • Promote and foster research within the Centre and Public Health.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of standards of practice in responding to alcohol and other drug problems.
  • Financial management of the Centre.
  • Clear understanding and commitment to social accountability as applies to teaching and research.
  • Promote and provide a safe working environment for students, staff and visitors.
  • Attract external funding and fellowships.
  • Recruit high calibre research higher degree students and postdoctoral fellows.
  • Perform innovative research with the potential to be highly cited and influential within the field.
  • Sharpen Flinders University’s research profile and build critical mass be strengthening existing research activities within their discipline area and/or creating new synergies with other discipline areas.
  • Contribute at an international level to research and consultancy in their area of expertise.
  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in their field of expertise.
  • Foster collaborations, both national and international, with external organisations and government bodies in their area of research.
  • Undertake other duties as determined by the Dean People and Resources of the College and Discipline Group Lead of Public Health.
  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.

Key Position Capabilities

  • Completion of a PhD or equivalent (including recognition as a leading authority in a relevant discipline area).
  • Evidence of successful strategic leadership of a research team or academic centre, including:
  • Development and implementation of plans and directions;
  • Track record of successful mentoring of staff.
  • Demonstrated outstanding research track record relative to opportunity with demonstrated potential to excel with opportunity.
  • Demonstrated experience and successful track record in supervision of higher degree students.
  • Demonstrated evidence of a strong research track record (for career stage) in an area aligned with research strengths, including evidence of sustained high quality publications with first authorship and attraction of competitive grants.
  • Record of attracting competitive grants and an ability to attract research and consultancy funds.
  • Provide evidence of a high level of academic achievement, demonstrating a commitment to research.
  • Demonstrated evidence of a distinguished and active track record of teaching expertise at tertiary level.
  • Demonstrated experience with engaging and developing flexible methods to deliver teaching programs such as through e-learning platforms and other communications technologies.
  • Ability to develop and maintain productive partnerships with external bodies, locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and maintaining links with industry and effective research collaborations.
  • Knowledge of the intellectual property and the commercialisation process in relation to a research environment.
  • Experience in the successful financial management of a research, teaching or similar unit within a University or other setting.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills, including the demonstrated ability to establish effective relationships with staff, students and industry nationally and/or internationally.
