About the opportunity

The University of Sydney, one of Australia’s most prestigious and highly reputed Universities, is looking for a Director of Media & Public Relations to lead the strategic development and implementation of their media and public relations functions. Leading a high-functioning team, you will be a curious and enthusiastic champion of learning and research who thrives in complex, highly stimulating environments. You will operate with a high degree of autonomy, provide advice to senior leaders, and work to increase the profile and brand position of the University both nationally and internationally.

Reporting to the Vice Principal External Relations, this is a senior role for a high-achieving media relations practitioner who has demonstrated results working in large, high-profile organisations. About the role:

  • Develop and implement media & PR strategies that align with the University’s strategic objectives and enhance brand position & reputation
  • Provide advice to the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and senior leaders
  • Manage the efficient delivery of local and international media coverage
  • Lead and mentor an outstanding media and PR team
  • Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders to ensure consistent messaging, to source stories and coordinate media & PR activity
  • Manage internal and external issues that can damage brand and reputation; identify potential issues that may arise and propose solutions
  • Manage third parties such as PR agencies and media monitoring service providers
  • Stay abreast of major trends and best practice in media and public relations
  • Develop and implement a media training program
  • Manage the Media and Public Relations budget

You have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in journalism, public relations, communications or a related discipline
  • Extensive experience in developing and implementing media and PR strategy; Experience in gaining proactive media coverage as well as managing issues
  • Experience in managing integrated media/PR campaigns, including a sound knowledge of social and digital media
  • Proven leadership and management skills within a large and complex organisation
  • An established media network and extensive knowledge of media operations
  • Experience in providing high-level advice to senior leadership
  • Stakeholder management and relationship building skills
  • Experience working in the higher education sector will be highly regarded

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
