  • Base Salary $145,184 plus 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

The Digital Infrastructure Engineer (Research Infrastructure) will play a crucial role in advancing the University’s digital research capabilities by coordinating the processes around the design, implementation, and enhancement of our state-of-the-art digital research infrastructure, with a particular focus on making us ‘digital ready’ for the opening of the Sydney Biomedical Accelerator. The role will actively collaborate with key stakeholders across the University, with a particular focus on our ICT and Sydney Informatics Hub teams, to deliver new digital research infrastructure, such as High Performance Computing, within the University.

The candidate should possess an extensive comprehension of the research data lifecycle, spanning from raw data handling through to computation, analysis, and storage, and demonstrate a strong strategic perspective on how digital infrastructure can bolster and support the research journey. They should also have the ability to proactively identify program-wide solutions aligning with the University’s broader research objectives. The candidate will stay actively engaged with current relevant communities and organisations, ensuring up-to-date knowledge of the latest advancements and innovations in data management technologies, compute, programming (etc.) both on a local and global scale.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • provide extensive digital infrastructure expertise and knowledge, delivering solutions that align with the University’s digital infrastructure strategy
  • drive the enhancement of the University’s research compute solutions, including High Performance Computing, to support the SBA Project and the University research community more broadly
  • design and implement detailed digital solutions to achieve business outcomes that support our physical research infrastructure
  • identify and close gaps between the current and future state digital research infrastructure landscape
  • analyse multiple solution options and make recommendations that are fit for purpose, fit for use and cybersecure
  • operate in both tactical and strategic spheres, addressing both the short term and long-term needs of the University
  • provide leadership and knowledge in the evaluation of vendor products and manage diverse stakeholders
  • negotiate and influence key academic, business and ICT stakeholders to implement digital research infrastructure solutions.

About you

  • tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or a related field and demonstrated experience in designing and implementing digital research infrastructure solutions
  • exceptional knowledge in cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), cloud native technologies (facilitating edge computing for defence, medical, and agriculture) and containerisation technologies (e.g., Kubernetes)
  • possess strong programming skills in languages such as Python, Java, or R, and, knowledge of data management best practices and, experience with databases and data warehouses
  • expert in Australian data security, cybersecurity compliance and privacy standards
  • experience in a large and complex organisation and demonstrated analytical skills and willingness to accept and overcome challenges effectively
  • ability to develop and leverage effective relationships with ICT, academic and business stakeholders in a complex environment
  • excellent planning and project co-ordination skills
  • strong verbal, written communication and presentation skills.
