Description

This project will evaluate the developmental trajectory of tongue control during speech, relating dynamic 3D vocal tract modelling to the acoustic signal. Using real-time MRI technology to capture and model articulatory movements, we will examine how tongue control for speech is developed, mastered, and perturbed by factors such as rapid growth and foreign accent. These novel physiological data will provide new insights into how different speakers' vocal tracts change and how speech is produced over the lifespan, and will inform linguistic theory and speech technologies.

You will be able to work on any aspect of the project that aligns with your training and interests, including phonetic and phonological characterization of speech development, vocal tract imaging, and articulatory and acoustic speech data analysis.

This position is supported by the ARC Discovery Project (DP220102933), and you will have the opportunity to work as part of an international team with leading researchers in linguistics, speech pathology, engineering, and medical imaging:  Prof. Kirrie Ballard (University of Sydney), Prof. Craig Jin (University of Sydney), and Dr Amelia Gully (University of York), and Dr. Sheryl Foster (University of Sydney).

Applicants with knowledge of Mandarin Chinese are encouraged to apply.
