General Counsel & University Secretary
Under the broad oversight of the General Counsel & University Secretary, the Deputy General Counsel is responsible for leading and managing the University's Legal Services function.
Key Position Responsibilities
The Deputy General Counsel is accountable for:
The effective and efficient management, coordination and leadership of the Legal Services function including:
ensuring effective coordination and allocation of legal services and support to the University's Senior Executive, Colleges and Portfolios as required;
the effective operation and enhancement of the University's Contract Administration services and capabilities generally;
implementation and enhancement of the University's Legislative Compliance Framework,
managing and directing staff within the function including the allocation of work, recruitment, induction, training and development; and
sourcing, briefing and managing the delivery of services by external legal service providers and ensuring costs are managed in line with internal budgets.
The provision, coordination and management of all legal advice and services to the University as required, including in relation to:
contracts, corporate and commercial transactions, property and infrastructure, employment and industrial relations, intellectual property, strategic projects, research and commercialisation;
internal governance, regulatory requirements, freedom of information, conflicts of interest and other regulatory, policy and governance matters; and
managing disputes and litigious matters generally.
Expert advice and support to the University including the identification of legal risks and proactive solutions to eliminate or manage those risks to advance the business of the University.
Developing and maintaining productive relationships with key stakeholders and staff across the University, in particular, senior management across the Colleges and Portfolios ensuring transparent, responsive and consistent high-quality customer service and effective communication.
Identifying opportunities to improve internal processes related to the Legal Services and related functions.
Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the role as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.
Key Position Capabilities
A Degree in Law obtained from an Australian university.
Admitted to, or eligible to, be admitted to the Supreme Court of South Australia as a Legal Practitioner.
Hold, or be eligible to hold, a current practicing certificate in South Australia.
Proven ability to provide practical, solution focused legal advice and support across a broad range of legal areas.
Demonstrated higher-level drafting, negotiation and communication skills and with a demonstrated ability to apply sound judgment to complex legal matters including instructing external counsel.
Significant experience in the leading and management of legal teams and proven ability to manage and achieve results in pressure situations and deal with ambiguity and change.
Project management experience.
Strong understanding and demonstrated expertise in corporate governance.
Able to build and maintain strong and effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
Significant post admission in-house experience in in organisations of a similar size and complexity (higher education sector would be desirable).
