About – Melbourne Centre for Data Science

Melbourne Centre for Data Science (MCDS) is a cross-disciplinary research centre administered out of two Schools – School of Computing and Information Systems and School of Mathematics and Statistics – and across two Faculties – Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology and Faculty of Science – with support from Chancellery. MCDS facilitates cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary research, research training and education in data science.

About the Role

Melbourne Centre for Data Science (MCDS) is seeking a qualified and enthusiastic Data Scientist to join a project funded by the NDIS Quality and Safeguard Commission. The project is being undertaken in collaboration with the University of Queensland and Flinders University.

The aim of the project is to develop innovative AI-based solutions that will enhance NDIS practitioners’ ability to develop quality Behaviour Support Plans (BSP). The Data Scientist will design and deploy a suite of natural language processing (NLP) modules to validate BSPs (textual inputs) against an assessment rubric. The NLP modules will be part of a larger standalone Learning Management system that will provide feedback to NDIS practitioners.

The Data Scientist will work with a small team of researchers, software engineers and other AI experts to bring an exciting new product through to trials with NDIS reference groups. Responsibilities include:

  • Authoring and/or adapting NLP code for a new Web system.
  • Developing and/or revising NLP features based on user feedback (assessments).
  • Liaising with product developers, engineers, and researchers to ensure application features are fit-for-purpose and performant.

About You

You are an experienced Data Scientist with highly-developed technical skills and an excellent team player. Your excellent communication and interpersonal skills enabling you to build effective working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders.

You will also have:

  • A BSc/MSc in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence or an associated discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of HTTP, consuming and building Rest APIs.
  • Experience with development of analytics’ applications in Python or Java.
  • Experience with No SQL document-based databases.
  • Competent with standard version control workflows (specifically Git & GitHub).
