About the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences
The Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences is a leader in agricultural, food and veterinary science education and research in Australia.

The faculty comprises the Melbourne Veterinary School and the School of Agriculture and Food. The faculty operates across three campuses: Parkville, Werribee and Dookie. We acknowledge and pay respect to the traditional owners of the lands upon which these campuses are situated, the Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung peoples and the Yorta Yorta Nation. In addition to education and research, the faculty operates a veterinary hospital at Werribee, a broadacre farm at Dookie, and an equine hospital in Shepparton.

About the Role
The C. R. Roper Fellow in Agricultural Science (Agronomy)is responsible for contributing to research at the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences, School of Agriculture and Food. Working within the Agronomy Group, this position will actively assist and participate in research to deliver project objectives and milestones.

Reporting to the discipline lead, the Roper Research Fellow (Agronomy) will contribute to and undertake research relating to grain crop production in Australia. They will collect, collate, curate and analyse data from new and existing sources and prepare publications.

This position will be primarily based at the University’s Parkville campus and may be required to attend and work from other sites and campuses from time to time.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Under the guidance and support of senior academic staff conduct internationally competitive research, resulting in publications in high impact journals
  • Contribute to and publish academic papers and other scholarly outputs to a high academic standard in accordance with the research expectations of the University of Melbourne
  • Engage with relevant professional and industry bodies and stakeholders to foster collaborative partnerships
  • Expand the knowledge of the discipline which impacts the field


About You
You will have the ability to work co-operatively and positively in a multi-disciplinary research-based team environment and liaise with people from diverse backgrounds and possess excellent organisational skills to meet deadlines and bring projects to a timely completion. You will have the ability to develop, administer and see through to completion appropriately designed research projects with limited supervision and have well-developed interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders including industry partners and collaborators, in a diverse environment.

You will also have:

  • A relevant postdoctoral degree awarded in Agricultural Science or a relevant discipline
  • Proven experience in conducting field experiments focussed on grain crops
  • Experience collating, curating, and managing large datasets of observations derived from field experiments
  • Experience conducting advanced statistical analyses on agronomic data
  • Demonstrated track record for leading write-up of publications in peer-reviewed science publication in the field of agronomy
