About Health and Medical Research Building

At the beginning of 2022, construction commenced on the $255 million Flinders Health and Medical Research Building (FHMRB). Due to open in the first quarter of 2024, the FHMRB will enable researchers, practitioners and industry partners to work together more closely than ever before, creating a hub of collaboration within southern Adelaide’s own biomedical research precinct. Located adjacent to Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders Private Hospital, it will be the focal point of research informed by genuine patient need, positioned to make an immediate improvement to people’s health and wellbeing. 


About the Role

Under general to broad direction, the Controlled Environment Biorepository Coordinator will develop, promote, implement, maintain and ongoing use and training of the inventory management system – OpenSpecimen within the College of Medicine and Public Health.

This position will work closely with researchers, Information Digital Services (IDS), Technical Services staff and external stakeholders to coordinate the usage of controlled environment infrastructure including -80 ultra colds and cryo-dewars and the cataloguing of biological and non-biological collections in a single database.

The Controlled Environment Biorepository Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring that all the processes in relation to the data system are developed, configured, and maintained to support the Colleges research operations in line with University and Legislative requirements.

They will determine their own priorities and work plans consistent with objectives of the position and undertake the annual Risk and Insurance Controlled Environment Audit.


About You

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:

  • Completion of a degree with subsequent relevant experience; or, extensive experience and/or specialist expertise or broad knowledge in technical fields; or an equivalent combination of experience and/or education and/or training.

  • Proven experience and knowledge of a working biological laboratory and in managing an inventory management database.

  • Proficiency with working with IT hardware and database, and ability to conduct data extractions, analysis, and reporting.

  • Well-developed written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, including experience in building relationships and networks with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders

  • Demonstrated knowledge of statutory and University safety and physical containment 2 (PC2) including Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) and quarantine compliance via the Dept of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).

  • Being available, if required after-hours in case of essential controlled environment equipment breakdown.
