Charles Gilbert Heydon Travelling Research Fellow

• Full time, 3 years fixed term, located on the Camperdown, Camden or Narrabri Campus, at the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, as appropriate for the project and by agreement with the Head of School

• Base Salary Level B $113,184 p.a. + 17% superannuation.

About the opportunity

The School of Life and Environmental Sciences (SOLES) at The University of Sydney is seeking to appoint up to two Charles Gilbert Heydon Travelling Research Fellows in Biological Sciences to undertake research related to sustainability and/or food security. SOLES comprises research disciplines from the fields of biochemistry, microbiology, ecology, evolution, environmental science, animal science, food science, and agriculture. SOLES has more than 200 academic and research staff across these disciplines, who collectively form a highly productive and collaborative environment for research. The University of Sydney has world class strength in agriculture, soil science, plant breeding, ecology, molecular science, and food production.

The role is characterised as a Travelling Research Fellow. Accordingly, the Fellow(s) must be working and residing overseas at the time of application (and be prepared to travel to Australia to complete the Fellowship) or otherwise able to show how they can meet the travel component of the role. Australians and non-Australians are eligible and encouraged to apply.

The successful applicant will have a track record of excellence in research publications and successful applications for research funding, demonstrating the clear potential to become an international leader in their field. The Research Fellows are expected to establish an independent research program and apply for external fellowships and funds to support their research program.

The successful applicant will have research interests that complement and/or enrich the existing strengths and expertise of the academic community within the School. They should have a track record of successful collaboration nationally and internationally and articulate a vision for potential collaboration within SOLES, across the University of Sydney, and beyond. The successful applicant will also be expected to participate in teaching, management, and administration as appropriate.

About you

• a PhD (or near completion) in an appropriate area related to biological sciences
• a research program in biological sciences that will promote sustainability and/or food security
• a track record of quality research publications as a first or senior author that demonstrate strength in a relevant field
• significant experience of successful supervision of PhD students, either formally or on a day-to-day basis
• a clear vision of how their planned research would complement and/or enrich the existing strengths and expertise of the School
• previous experience of successful collaborative projects
• demonstrated understanding and experience of relevant work, health, and safety issues including laboratory and/or field-based work for research undertaken in their discipline.
