About the opportunity

The Faculty of Medicine and Health is the largest faculty in the University. This integrated faculty brings opportunity for innovation, progressive thinking and challenging the status quo by establishing productive research units that cross traditional academic school and discipline boundaries. We operate across four large health precincts (three metropolitan and one regional/rural) where University facilities are co-located with hospitals and medical research institutes.

The University of Sydney School of Pharmacy (Sydney Pharmacy School), part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health, graduates approximately 250 intern pharmacists each year who enter the workforce via the school’s flagship undergraduate and the graduate entry Pharmacy programs which are accredited by the Australian Pharmacy Council. Sydney Pharmacy School staff lead the teaching of pharmacology and therapeutics across the Faculty of Medicine Health teaching into pharmacy, nursing, dentistry, medicine, science and medical science degrees. The school employs 50 continuing academic staff and trains over 100 higher degree research students (mostly PhD candidates) in the school, with around 10-15 graduating each year.

The Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) employs approximately 12,000 staff. It consists of 5 hospitals with a total of approximately 2,000 inpatient beds, and the Kolling Medical Research Institute. Royal North Shore Hospital is a major teaching hospital of the University of Sydney with a world class multi-story acute clinical services building including state-of-the-art pharmacy facilities.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding senior academic at the level of Professor to the role of Chair of Clinical Pharmacy. The role is a conjoint appointment with NSLHD, based at Royal North Shore Hospital, and will carry academic responsibilities in the learning and teaching, research and service portfolios at the University and NSLHD. In addition, it is envisaged that the successful applicant will contribute to NSLHD in terms of quality patient care, inter-professional teaching, leadership in clinical research, drug development and health care service more generally.

As a senior academic and leader, the Chair of Clinical Pharmacy will be encouraged to actively engage in leadership and engagement roles in the hospital, local health district, university and the wider health sector including the medicines industry and Australian governments. In this position, the successful candidate will:

  • foster excellence and provide pivotal leadership in research, teaching, evidence-based pharmacotherapy, drug development and quality use of medicines in a specialist clinical area and health and pharmaceutical policy development in the University and the Local Health District;

  • contribute to an expanding program of professional and hospital research collaboration, with a focus on the School’s and the Local Health District’s core research areas and existing research groups, and build partnerships with relevant industry, academic and health-related contacts and organisations;

  • provide demonstrated leadership of international standing in scholarship through innovative and distinguished funded research;

  • promote inter-professional collaboration between pharmacy and other healthcare students, and between various health practitioners in the clinical setting as well as through the teaching of pharmacy students.

About you (skills, capabilities and experience)

The successful candidate will hold PhD qualifications in a relevant academic field and possess an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the key strategic issues in the higher education sector.
