The Department of Biomedical Engineering is a vibrant and rapidly growing department within the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT), working on some of the most challenging problems at the interface of engineering with life and medical sciences. The central aim of the Department is to apply interdisciplinary expertise and thinking to make new discoveries and provide innovative solutions that will improve healthcare and social wellbeing. 

Our research covers a breadth of areas in biomaterials and tissue engineering; biomechanics and mechanobiology; bionics, biomedical imaging and neuroengineering; systems and synthetic biology. We have strong national and international linkages with industry, hospitals, research institutes, and universities.

We teach students within the Bioengineering Systems undergraduate majors in the Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Biomedicine, and offer two Masters programs: Master of Engineering (Biomedical) and Master of Engineering (Biomedical with Business). 

About the Role
The Centre for Advanced Defence Research and Enterprise (CADRE-OCE) is a collaborative initiative with four Founding University Partners comprising the University of Melbourne, University of Adelaide, Queensland University of Technology, and the University of New South Wales. The CADRE-OCE is a nationally integrated and coordinated effort, designed to align with and augment current OCE STaR Shot capabilities and capacity. The Centre will establish the ecosystem needed to support the Australian Government’s broader objectives by building enduring sovereign capability and innovative technologies to address chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats that may affect the security of the nation.

The Centre Manager represents a key position within CADRE-OCE. Working in close partnership with the Centre Director, OCE STaR Shot Team and Founding University Partners, the Centre Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Centre. The position exercises a high degree of delegated responsibility and autonomy. Considerable initiative, excellent written communication and negotiation skills, strategic planning ability and sound judgement are all essential attributes.

The position will also play a key role in ensuring the Centre meets its reporting obligations against key performance indicators. The role works closely with the FEIT Defence and National Security sector-facing platform, and staff from across the Faculty and the University.

The Centre Manager, CADRE-OCE will report to the Centre Director.

Responsibilities include:

  • Proactively seeking out opportunities to strengthen industry links and foster sustainable partnerships. This includes links with multinational companies, small-medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups.
  • Organising and coordinating outreach activities and events to facilitate and strengthen interdisciplinary engagement with defence, industry, and academia.
  • Managing the operational, financial and reporting requirements of CADRE-OCE.
  • Undertaking administrative duties in a timely and effective manner; this includes providing administrative support to the Centre Director.

About You
To be successful in this role you will bring a demonstrated ability to manage projects and respond efficiently to changing priorities and deadlines. You will have high-level problem-solving skills with the ability to exercise judgement and initiative. You will be confident in your written communication skills with the ability to write reports and communication material. You will also have excellent interpersonal skills with ability to develop strong links with stakeholders from academia, defence, industry and government.

You will also have:

  • A postgraduate degree, or equivalent qualifications and/or extensive experience in a similar role in a large and complex organisation.
  • Demonstrated experience in effective financial, human and physical resource management with accountability for the overall financial viability of the Centre. 
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in organising workshops and conferences, development of enabling resources, and involvement in outreach activities.
  • Desired experience in supporting and/or managing defence-related activities.
