About the opportunity 

As one of the Heads of the professional leadership team for the Faculty of Science, the Head of Technical Operations provides sound expert advice and input in the development of strategy, policy and planning and leads a team of professional and technical specialists responsible for delivery of school-based technical services and service to the faculty’s Camden and Narrabri sites.

The successful candidate is expected to exercise a high degree of initiative and adopt sound judgement to provide University leaders with appropriate strategies, frameworks, processes and advice. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a range of staff and stakeholders in the University environment to meet Faculty and University wide objectives. To be successful in this role you will possess expert knowledge and experience within Technical Services, allowing you to resolve complex issues. You will also have extensive people and financial management experience as well as risk management and workplace health and safety experience.

The Faculty of Science is one of six faculties operating within the University and includes the Schools of Chemistry, Geosciences, History and Philosophy of Science, Life and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics & Statistics, Physics, Psychology and the Sydney School of Veterinary Science. The Faculty stewards a range of research entities including the Sydney Institute of Agriculture and the Lambert Initiative for Cannabinoid Therapeutics, and partners with University-wide research centres including the Charles Perkins Centre (CPC), the Brain and Mind Centre (BMC) and the Australian Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology (AINST).

About you

  • qualifications in engineering, science, business, law, or related field with extensive relevant experience in technical operations, facilities management and/or equivalent combination of relevant training and experience

  • has an ability to lead a large and diverse team that is effective, engaged, focused on delivering results, and will facilitate the excellent delivery of enterprise-wide technical service

  • is experienced in translating and implementing strategic initiatives into local operational practices that enhance the performance of the work

  • has excellent knowledge of Risk Management practices and the application of Government Legislation, Codes of Practice and Australian Standard for workplace compliance, as well as the regulatory framework of particular significance to the Faculty and the University

  • is an expert in developing, managing budgets and controlling expenditure.
