  • Level 9, full-time appointment on an ongoing basis
  • Base salary range: $123,330 – $130,504 p.a. (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation

About the team

The UWA Defence and Security Institute (DSI) is committed to serving as a hub for the university and the WA community, raising the visibility of UWA academics and researchers with local, national and international practitioners and partners in the defence and security space. A key role is to facilitate and enhance the ability of UWA researchers and educators to engage with the ADF, defence industry, government, and other universities, to deliver outcomes that collectively progress our national defence and security strategies and capabilities. Through Defence and US Government grants UWA DSI also delivers frequent roundtables, public events and strategy papers. With a focus on the dynamic Indo-Pacific region these leverage local perspectives and expertise on issues such as disruptive and converging technologies; defence industry; defence capability development and maritime security; Australia’s international and defence relations and regional security. UWA DSI has also developed a strong working relationship with the State Government in supporting delivery of major events such as the Indian Ocean Defence and Security Conference.

About the opportunity

As the appointee you will, under broad direction, work with the Director to develop policies, budgets, strategic plans, and other key deliverables, as well as establishing and managing processes and operations, to ensure the effective and efficient functioning of the Institute.

Under broad direction you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all fiscal, statutory, policy, and legal requirements of the grant programs delivered by UWA DSI such as those funded by the Australian and US Governments.

You will work closely with the Director and UWA DSI Executive Committee to further the University's mission and goals; and to facilitate strategic liaison and networks with affiliated staff, key external groups and institutions and the broader community.

To be considered for this opportunity, you will demonstrate:

  • Relevant post-graduate qualification or demonstrated equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to long term planning and strategic direction at an influential level
  • Substantial demonstrated experience in planning, budgeting, financial control, resource allocation, and reporting
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills with the demonstrated ability to manage a wide range of responsibilities, set priorities, identify and address gaps, and meet deadlines to contribute to the Institute’s objectives and obligations
  • Demonstrated extensive ability to develop new and effective planning and administrative systems and adapt to a dynamic environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to negotiate and manage key relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to research and write reports and background papers
  • Ability to work independently, show initiative, problem solve, and lead a team, with demonstrated team building skills and ability to work productively in a team environment
