About the opportunity
The ARC Australian Centre for Excellence in Antarctic Science (ACEAS) Business Manager based at the University of Tasmania, will have strong project management and communication skills to provide high-level administrative support to the Director and the Research Program Leaders in the management of the Centre, including human resources, contractual and financial arrangements with the participants and collaborators, oversight of the support services provided by the host institution, and the planning and coordination of the functions of the Centre.
The Business Manager will also provide high-level analysis and advice on the Centre’s performance against contracted KPIs, as well as senior and executive level engagement with external organisations in the industry, government and non-government organisation sectors. Other responsibilities include: oversight of annual reporting, legal matters, internal policy development, contract negotiation, compliance with contracts, and strategic management of human resources.
The Business Manager is a full-time position funded by ACEAS, commencing in early 2024 and concluding in December 2025.
ACEAS supports the research of around 150 researchers and employ over 38 postdoctoral researchers, approximately 24 PhD students, and management and administrative support teams. PhD students and postdoctoral researchers will be distributed across all University partners. Their research is supported by extensive investment in technical expertise and support, researcher development and operations staff.
What you’ll do:
- Provide high-level executive business management and policy assistance and advice to the Director on all matters relating to the Centre’s budget, administration and operations, and oversee the day-to-day management of members of professional staff
- Assist the Director to ensure the ongoing functioning of, reporting to and compliance with, contractual arrangements with the Centre’s research participants and funders including KPIs.
- Provide advice and support to the Director in engaging effectively with stakeholders and end-users in government and industry, including through the preparation of written material suitable for those audiences.
- Assist the Director to manage the Centre funds to enable the effective utilisation of Centre resources, in close collaboration with the University administration and Centre participants, and in conjunction with relevant professionals.
- Assist the Director in developing project governance and monitoring arrangements, and manage reporting arrangements with all project collaborators, the University, the Advisory Board, and the Australian Research Council.
- Work closely with the Director and Management Committee to coordinate the activities of the Centre, and develop, and keep up-to-date, internal policies and strategic and business plans for the Centre.
- Develop and communicate administrative procedures and provide guidance and interpret administrative policy and procedures for Centre personnel.
What we’re looking for:
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline (e.g., science, policy, business administration) together with significant demonstrated experience at an executive level in the management and administration of complex projects in a scientifically-orientated research organisation.
- Ability to oversee and prepare complex budgets in conjunction with relevant professionals.
- Proven capacity to negotiate the terms of research agreements and oversee the drafting and implementation of legal documents and contracts by legal professionals.
- Demonstrated high-level oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience in the monitoring and reporting of milestones, KPIs, outcomes, and achievements.
- High level of competence with computer applications and advanced knowledge of a range of software including word processing, spreadsheet, email, and internet applications.
- Previous experience as a Business Manager in Research Centres or similar multi-institutional collaborative ventures within a tertiary education environment.
Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at HEO 9 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $151,543 comprising base salary within the range of $122,887 to $129,524 plus 17% superannuation.
