12 month fixed term contract-potential for extension

Wirltu Yarlu Aboriginal Education is responsible for recruiting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to the University's foundation and degree programs, administering the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Access Pathway, and providing support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in the University. Wirltu Yarlu also has oversight of the University’s Aboriginal Research Strategy, Aboriginal Employment Strategy, Tarrkarri Tirrka (Future Learning) (Education Strategy), Reconciliation Action Plan and delivery of the Indigenous Knowledges courses. The Unit is currently undertaking a major project to reinvigorate the University’s First Nation’s policy framework and supporting governance and administration arrangements.

Receiving broad direction from the Manager, Wirltu Yarlu and the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Engagement) (PVC(IE)), and operating with a high degree of overall autonomy, the Business Development and Operations Manager is responsible for the coordination, implementation and review of the outcomes of the strategic activities and investments of Wirltu Yarlu across the policy and project planning functions. The Business Development and Operations Manager oversees operational areas including research and policy development, funding schemes, financial reporting, and marketing and communications, and supervises the professional staff in the policy and strategy team.

The Business Development and Operations Manager, Wirltu Yarlu is expected to make a significant contribution to all activities of Wirltu Yarlu, as well as building relationships with faculties, central business units and the broader Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. The Business Development and Operations Manager will also provide leadership to the Wirltu Yarlu team and the University in creating learning environments for all students, and working environments for all employees, that are respectful and welcoming, and that embed Indigenous views, knowledges and voices. The incumbent is required to maintain excellent collaborative working relationships with relevant Schools and Divisions of the University, as well as external stakeholders.

To be successful you will need:

  • comprehensive awareness and understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, particularly in the higher education sector;
  • demonstrated senior business development experience, including project and budget management, supervision of staff and compliance reporting;
  • clear understanding of governance requirements in a higher education context;
  • demonstrated experience in providing sound strategic advice, including preparation of reports, background briefings or similar;
  • knowledge of, or preparedness to gain, familiarity with University policies and procedures and an understanding of current management practices and principles of human resources, HSW and financial reporting.
